How Gift Cards Work

Gift cards let clients buy credit to spend on trips. Learn how gift cards work, what the recipient and purchaser receive, and what each status means.

Gift cards let clients buy credit to spend on trips with your business. Each gift card has a 16-digit code, which the recipient uses to pay for a booking.

To find your gift cards, click Gift cards in the left sidebar, under Products.

The basics

  • Issuing: You can issue a gift card from your dashboard. If you turn on Sell gift cards online, clients can also buy gift cards in your online booking.

  • Who can use it: A gift card isn't tied to a client. The purchaser is recorded, but anyone with the code can use the card.

  • Balance: The card's value is set when it's issued and can't be topped up. The balance can be used across multiple bookings until it reaches $0.00.

  • Fees: Gift card payments cover both the trip and the booking fees.

  • Paying at checkout: To pay with a gift card in online booking, the card's balance has to cover the full total, including booking fees. If it doesn't, the client contacts you, and you apply the remaining balance from your dashboard.

What the recipient and purchaser receive

If you enter an email address when issuing the card, the recipient gets an email titled "A gift card from [sender's name]." It includes:

  • the gift card code

  • the card's value

  • the message, if one was added

  • a View your gift card link

  • your contact details

The View your gift card link opens the gift card page, which shows the card's value, the message, the To and From names, and the card number with a Copy button. Once the card has been used, the page also shows its remaining balance. If you've set a shop link, the page also shows a Shop trips button that takes the recipient to your online booking.

The purchaser receives a separate receipt once their payment goes through. It confirms the amount paid, how it was paid, and who the gift card will be emailed to.

These emails are the Gift Card Delivery and Gift Card Receipt client notifications. Both are sent by email only, can't be turned off, and can be edited from your client notification settings. See Explaining each Client Notification in Brindlechute.

Gift card statuses

  • Active: The card has a remaining balance. Active cards are listed in the Active tab.

  • Depleted: The card's full balance has been spent. Depleted cards move to the Inactive tab automatically.

You can also deactivate a gift card yourself to stop it from being used. See How to Manage a Gift Card.
