How to pay a business expense from your chequing account

You don't need a credit card to pay bills with Chexy, you can pay straight from a linked chequing account instead. This guide walks you through setting up a payment from your bank account, from choosing who you're paying to scheduling the payment.

Step 1: Choose who you're paying

From your Chexy home screen, select the Business tab, then start a new payment. Search for your vendor, or pick a category like Payroll, Contractors, Inventory, or Equipment.

Step 2: Choose how your recipient gets paid

Pick the delivery method that matches how your recipient collects the money:

  • Interac e-Transfer — sent to your recipient by email (most popular)

  • Pre-Authorized Debit (PAD) — set up with a void cheque; your recipient withdraws the money automatically

  • Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) — sent directly to your recipient's bank account using their account details

Step 3: Enter the amount and payment date

Enter the payment amount and choose whether it's a one-time or recurring payment. You can also give the payment a nickname to find it easily later.

Click Payment date to choose when your recipient should get the money.

Step 4: Fill in the delivery details

Interac e-Transfer example shown below.

Step 5: Add your recipient's information

Tell us a bit more about who you're paying: whether they're an individual or a business, their name, and their phone number and address.

Step 6: Upload a supporting document (if requested)

For some payment types, we'll ask for a document — such as a lease, invoice, or bill — that clearly shows who you're paying and the payment amount.

Step 7: Review your payment

Double-check the amount, payment date, recipient, and delivery details. You can edit any section with the pencil icon.

Step 8: Select your chequing account as the payment method

This is the key step. Click the payment method selector. You'll see all of your saved payment methods — credit cards and bank accounts.

  • To pay from a chequing account you've already linked, just select it.

  • To link a chequing account, click + Add a new bank account.

Step 9: Connect your bank account (first time only)

If you're adding a new account, you'll connect it through a secure window:

A few things to know before you start:

  • Bank-level security — your bank link uses 256-bit encryption, the same standard your bank uses. Chexy never stores your login credentials.

  • It takes about 2 minutes — you'll sign in to your bank once, and you won't need to sign in again.

  • You're in control — you decide when payments happen, and we'll always show you the amount and date before any money leaves your account.

Click Connect your bank, then choose your financial institution from the list.

Log in with your online banking credentials and complete your bank's usual verification (like a one-time code by text or call).

Once you've verified, hang tight while your account connects — this can take up to 2 minutes. Keep the screen open.

Step 10: Schedule the payment

With your chequing account selected, review the final summary. You'll see two dates:

  • Withdrawal date — when the money leaves your chequing account

  • Payment date — when your recipient receives it

Funds are withdrawn a few business days before the payment date (for example, a withdrawal on July 21 for a July 24 payment). You'll also see the full cost breakdown — payment amount, processing fee, and any discounts — before anything is charged.

When everything looks good, click Schedule payment. That's it!

FAQ

When does the money leave my account?
A few business days before your recipient gets paid — the exact withdrawal date is always shown on the review screen before you schedule the payment.

Is it safe to connect my bank account?
Yes. Bank connections use 256-bit encryption — the same standard your bank uses — and Chexy never stores your banking login credentials.

Can I still use a credit card?
Absolutely. The payment method selector lets you switch between any saved credit card or bank account for each payment. Note that some payment types are card-network restricted (marked "Visa + MC only").

How long does a payment take?
Standard payments take 4 business days. If you need the money to arrive sooner, choose a rush date when picking your payment date.
