To pay your mortgage through Chexy, one thing has to change: the bank account your lender withdraws from. You'll give your lender your Chexy account details instead of your own bank's, and from then on your mortgage payment is drawn from Chexy.
That's the only change. Your rate, terms, amortization, payment date and lender all stay exactly the same.
Every lender handles this a little differently — some in a 10-minute phone call, some online, some only in a branch. Find yours below.
How each lender handles it
Select your lender to jump straight to the steps.
Lender | How | Roughly how long |
In person at a branch | One appointment
Phone | ~10 min call, then 2–10 business days
Phone | ~8 min call | |
Phone, then email a void cheque | ~10 min call, effective within about a week
Online form | A few minutes, confirmed by email
Usually phone | See the general steps below |
Before you contact your lender
Whichever lender you're with, have these ready. Almost every delay we see comes from missing one of them.
Your Chexy banking details — institution number, transit number, and account number, found in your Chexy dashboard.
Your Chexy void cheque — some lenders ask for it, some don't. Have a digital copy saved either way.
Your mortgage number.
Photo ID — essential for a branch visit, and your lender will verify your identity on the phone too.
Start early. Some lenders take up to 10 business days to process the change. Give yourself at least two weeks before your next payment date.
Leave your old account funded until you've confirmed a payment has come out of Chexy. If the change hasn't taken effect yet, your lender will still draw from the old account — and an empty account means a missed mortgage payment.
RBC
You'll need to go into a branch. RBC has told our customers that the mortgage payment account can only be changed in person.
Bring with you:
Two pieces of government-issued ID
Your RBC debit card
Your Chexy banking details
You'll be asked to sign a form authorizing the change.
Call your branch first. Requirements vary between branches, and a two-minute call can save you a wasted trip. Ask whether you need an appointment, what ID to bring, and how long it will take.
TD
Done over the phone, in about 10 minutes.
The fastest way to reach the right team is through the TD app:
Open the TD app and tap More
Tap Contact Us, then Call Us, then Account
Choose Payment Changes under Mortgage & FlexLine
Or call the mortgage payment changes line directly at 1 (844) 760-0258.
Have ready: institution number, transit number, account number, and your Chexy void cheque in case they ask. You'll give verbal authorization on the call.
Processing takes 2 to 10 business days after the call, so don't leave it to the last minute.
If "Peoples Trust Company" doesn't come up in their system, that's fine. Chexy's accounts are held at Peoples Trust, and it sometimes doesn't appear in TD's dropdown. The representative can enter the details manually. Just ask them to read the numbers back to you before you hang up.
Scotiabank
Done over the phone, in about 8 minutes.
Call Scotiabank and say you'd like to update the bank account your mortgage payments are withdrawn from.
Have ready: institution number, transit number, account number.
What to expect: the representative will read your details back to you, then play a short pre-authorized debit authorization recording — about two minutes — and ask for your verbal consent. That's a normal part of the process, not a sign anything is wrong.
CIBC
Two steps: a phone call, then an email. The call takes about 10 minutes.
Step 1 — Call CIBC. Say you'd like to update your mortgage payment account, and give them your institution number, transit number, and account number.
Before you hang up, write down the representative's ID. You'll need it for the next step.
Step 2 — Email your Chexy void cheque to mailbox.cibcmortgageservicing@cibc.com.
Put both your mortgage number and the representative's ID in the subject line so CIBC can match your email to the request from your call.
You probably won't get a confirmation email. That's normal. The change generally takes effect within about a week.
CMLS
Entirely online — no phone call, no branch.
Submit a banking information update request through CMLS's online form, filling in your Chexy banking details and attaching your Chexy void cheque.
You'll get an email confirming the request was received, that your banking information has been updated, and the effective date of the change. Keep it — the effective date tells you exactly which payment will be the first one drawn from Chexy.
My lender isn't listed
Chexy works with virtually every Canadian mortgage lender, and the process is broadly the same everywhere. Here's how to handle it.
1. Call your lender and ask the right question. Say: "I'd like to change the bank account my mortgage payments are withdrawn from." Some lenders call this updating your pre-authorized debit or PAD details. Ask for the mortgage servicing or payments team — general customer service often can't make this change.
2. Ask how they accept the change before you go any further — phone, online form, secure message, or a branch visit. This single question tells you what the rest of the process looks like.
3. Give them your Chexy details — institution number, transit number, account number — and send a void cheque if they ask for one.
4. Expect to authorize the change. Depending on the lender that means verbal consent on a recorded line, a signed form, or an emailed void cheque.
5. Before you finish, ask these three questions:
Can you read the account details back to me?
Which payment date will this take effect from?
Do you need anything else from me?
If the account details don't appear in their system under Peoples Trust Company, ask the representative to enter them manually — this comes up occasionally and is not a problem.
Will my payment date or amount change?
No. Changing the account only changes where the money comes from. Your payment frequency, due dates, rate, and terms all stay the same unless you've separately arranged something different with your lender.
Should I close my old bank account?
Not yet. Keep it open and funded until you've seen at least one mortgage payment come out of Chexy. Closing it too early — or emptying it — risks a returned payment if your lender hasn't processed the change.
When should I start?
At least two weeks before your next mortgage payment. Most lenders process the change in a few business days, but TD quotes up to 10 business days, and a branch appointment may take time to book.
My mortgage has two borrowers. Does that change anything?
It might. Some lenders require all borrowers to authorize a change to the payment account. Ask when you call so you're not turned away partway through.
I gave my lender the wrong details. What now?
Contact your lender as soon as you notice. Correcting it before your next payment date avoids a returned payment. Then double-check your details against your Chexy dashboard.
Once the switch is done
Make sure your mortgage payment is set up in Chexy and your Aeroplan account is linked, so you earn on your first payment. See Mortgage Payments with Chexy: How It Works for the full details.
