How Wallet Works & How to Use It

How to load your Wallet, pay a credit card bill with it, manage withdrawals, and what happens if you're short on funds.

Loading your Wallet

There are two ways to add money to your Chexy Wallet:

Method

Funds available

Limit

Bank transfer

3 business days

$5,000

Debit card (Visa Direct)

Next business day, with up to $1,000 instantly available at any time

No Chexy-side limit — capped by your own bank's debit limit

Debit card loading requires a Visa debit card specifically. Mastercard debit and prepaid cards (e.g. Wealthsimple prepaid Mastercard) will not work. If you bank with RBC, your physical debit card won't work — you'll need to use your RBC Virtual Visa Debit Card instead.

How to add money to your Wallet

  1. From your Wallet, tap Load cash.

  2. Enter an amount — you can type a custom amount or tap one of the quick-select amounts ($100, $250, $500, $2,500).

  3. Tap From to choose your funding source. If you haven't linked one yet, you'll be asked to either:

    • Add Visa direct debit card — enter your card number, expiry, CVC, and cardholder name (remember, it must be a Visa debit card).

    • Link bank account — connect securely through Flinks, our bank-linking partner, by signing in to your bank through their secure window.

  4. Once your funding source is selected, tap Continue to confirm the amount and complete the load.

Your funds will show as pending until they clear, based on the timelines in the table above.

Paying a credit card bill with your Wallet

  1. From Pay a bill, search for or select your credit card issuer. Some categories are restricted to certain card networks — you'll see a note like "Visa and Mastercard only" if that applies.

  2. Confirm the payment method — for a credit card bill this is Pre-Authorized Debit (PAD), matching how your card issuer collects payment.

  3. Enter the payment amount and choose your payment date. Standard payments are charged 4 business days before the pay date so they arrive on time; if you need it sooner, you can pick a rush date instead. You can also set the payment to repeat (e.g. monthly) or leave it as one-time.

  4. Review the summary — payment method, amount, date, repeat frequency, and recipient — then continue to checkout.

  5. On the checkout screen, confirm you're paying from your Chexy Wallet, check the payment amount and any fees, then tap Pay.

After paying, you'll see a confirmation with one more step: updating your account/transit/institution details with your card issuer (or downloading a void cheque), so they know to expect the payment from Chexy. You can do this right away or skip it for later.

When will my recipient mark my bill as paid? Your payment is sent on your pay date, but some recipients take 1–2 business days to process it. Check your card issuer's own dashboard to confirm it's been posted.

When will my card be charged? For standard payments, your card is charged 4 business days before the pay date so the payment goes out on time. For rush payments, it's charged right away so we can send it as soon as possible. Either way, the payment itself is sent on the pay date, and any rewards are earned as soon as the charge goes through.

Managing withdrawals from your Wallet

The first time a new biller or payee tries to withdraw from your Wallet, you'll get a push notification and an email asking you to approve or reject it. You'll have time to decide, based on your plan:

Plan

Time to respond

Free

2 days

Essential

7 days

Plus

14 days

If you approve: you can pay from your Wallet balance, or redirect the payment to a credit card if it falls under one of our eligible categories. If you want to pay with Amex, you may need to upload a receipt/document to qualify. Chexy remembers your choice for that payee going forward — you can change it any time in your Recipient settings.

If you reject: Chexy automatically rejects all future withdrawal attempts from that biller too.

Blocking a payee in Chexy does not cancel the bill with the biller itself. You'll still need to contact the biller directly to stop or redirect that payment on their end.

If you're short on funds (NSF protection)

If a payment would take your Wallet negative, Chexy gives you extra days to top up before anything is declined (see "What is Chexy Wallet?" for how many days, by plan).

  • On the final day of that window, Chexy automatically tries to pull the funds — either via EFT or your linked credit card.

  • If that attempt fails, the withdrawal is returned to the biller, which may trigger fees or penalties on their end. We recommend topping up well before the deadline to avoid this.
