Which Cards Does Chexy Accept?
Chexy accepts Visa, Mastercard, and American Express credit cards. The card must be a standard credit card issued by a recognized financial institution and in your name.
International cards (issued outside Canada) are also accepted, with an associated processing fee of 2.5%.
Please note that while American Express cards are generally accepted, there may be restrictions for certain payment categories (see below).

Some payment categories on Chexy require a Visa or Mastercard credit card. You will see a blue Visa + MC Only badge next to these categories during setup.

Telecommunications
Wellness
Examples include transit or parking accounts, mobile phone and internet bills, and gym or fitness memberships. Specific billers may vary by region.
What does "Visa + MC Only" mean?
If you currently use an Amex as your default card, you have two options:
Add a Visa or Mastercard in My Cards → Update card, then return to your payment.
Make this payment directly, outside of Chexy.
Amex credit cards cannot be used as a substitute for these categories.
Why are only some categories restricted?
These rules come from billers and payment networks. Credit card providers periodically apply category-based restrictions on certain payment processors. This may result in:
Specific payment types being temporarily blocked
Certain merchant categories being restricted
Transactions being declined, even if they previously worked
These restrictions are applied at the card network level and are outside of Chexy's control. They may be lifted in the future, but there is no guaranteed timeline.
Fees, rewards, and limits
Processing fees and credit card rewards work the same as other card-funded payments — whether you're using a Visa or Mastercard, you'll continue to earn rewards at the same rate. Some billers place rules on which credit card networks they accept. Chexy follows those rules to ensure your payment is processed correctly.
How will I know in the app?
Look for the Visa / Mastercard only badge on the category screen. If you try to continue with an Amex or without a Visa or Mastercard on file, Chexy will prompt you to add one.
Why Is My Prepaid Card Not Working?
Chexy does not support prepaid cards. If you receive a "Bank verification failed" message while using a prepaid Visa or prepaid credit card, this is expected.
Why are prepaid cards not accepted?
Prepaid cards are restricted due to compliance and verification requirements. Chexy requires:
A standard credit card issued by a regulated financial institution
Full identity and bank verification capability
Prepaid cards do not meet these requirements. Debit-prepaid, gift cards, and reloadable prepaid cards are all unsupported.
What can I use instead?
You must use a traditional credit card (Visa, Mastercard, or Amex) issued by a recognized financial institution, in your name.
If you continue receiving verification errors, please ensure you are using a standard credit card and that the billing details match your Chexy account.
