Wallet Payments vs. Credit Card Payments: What's the Difference?

The two ways to pay with Chexy — charging a credit card directly, or paying from your Wallet balance — and which bills belong to each.

This article covers personal (consumer) accounts only. Wallet's expanded bill coverage does not apply to Business accounts — business payments still work the way they always have.

Two ways to pay with Chexy

Chexy gives you two different ways to cover a bill, and which one you use depends on what you're paying:

  1. Charge a credit card directly — the original Chexy model. You pick a bill, pick a credit card, and Chexy charges that card to pay your bill.

  2. Pay from your Chexy Wallet balance — newer, and the only way to pay certain bill types. You load money into your Wallet first, then that balance is used to pay the bill via Pre-Authorized Debit (PAD), Bill Pay, or e-Transfer.

Both ways exist side by side — using Wallet for some bills doesn't change how you pay everything else by credit card.

What you can pay by credit card

This is the original, broader list — these bills can be charged directly to a credit card on file, no Wallet required:

  • Rent

  • Utilities

  • Insurance

  • Childcare & Education

  • Income, Property & Business Taxes

  • Household Expenses

  • Telecommunications

  • Transportation (car leases)

  • Gym & Wellness Memberships

Card network eligibility (Visa, Mastercard, Amex) varies by category — see "What types of bills can I pay with Chexy?" for the full breakdown. This list is unchanged by the Wallet launch.

What you can only pay from your Wallet

These bill types are new — they were not payable through Chexy at all before Wallet, and they're not chargeable to a credit card. They can only be paid from money sitting in your Wallet balance:

  • Credit card bills (paying off a Visa or Mastercard — not Amex)

  • Car loan & financing payments

  • Buy Now Pay Later providers, like Affirm

  • Other personal loans

  • Brokerage & investment account payments

You can't fund one of these payments by charging a credit card — the money has to come from your Wallet balance. Load your Wallet first via Visa Direct (debit) or your linked bank account, then pay from that balance using whichever delivery method fits the recipient — PAD, Bill Pay, or e-Transfer.

Why use Wallet instead of a credit card?

  • It's the only way to pay these bill types at all. Chexy doesn't let you charge a credit card to pay off another credit card, a car loan, or a brokerage account — so Wallet is the only path for these.

  • Interest while it waits. Any money sitting in your Wallet earns interest in the meantime.

  • Built-in protections. Wallet comes with NSF protection and withdrawal control, so you're not caught off guard by a payment you didn't expect.

This doesn't change anything about your existing credit-card-paid bills. Rent, utilities, and everything else you already pay by credit card keeps working exactly the same way — Wallet is additive, not a replacement.
