Card Splitting: How to Split Payments Across Two Cards

Learn how to split a single Chexy payment across two credit cards — available for Chexy Plus users.

What is Card Splitting?

Card Splitting lets you divide a single Chexy payment across two credit cards. Instead of charging one card for the full amount, you choose how much goes on each card — giving you more flexibility to manage your credit limits and rewards.

It's useful when a payment is larger than one card's available credit, or when you'd like to spread a large bill across two rewards programs.

Your payee still receives one payment, on one date, exactly as before — the only thing that changes is how it's funded.

Who can use Card Splitting?

Card Splitting is available to:

  • Chexy Plus subscribers

  • Business account holders — under their Business account only (not available on a personal account)

If you're on the Essential plan, you'll see the Card Splitting option in the app, but you'll be prompted to upgrade to Chexy Plus to use it. To see what else Plus includes, visit Chexy Membership: what's included and how much it costs.

How to split a payment

  1. When setting up or editing a payment, look for the Card Splitting option.

  2. Select your primary card and enter the amount you'd like charged to it.

  3. Select your secondary card for the remaining balance.

  4. Review and confirm your payment.

Rules & restrictions

There are a few things to keep in mind when using Card Splitting:

  • Credit cards only — both halves of a split must be credit cards. A bank account can't be one of them, so payments funded from a chequing account (including mortgage payments) can't be split. This doesn't affect how your payment is delivered — a card-funded payment sent by PAD, Bill Pay, or e-Transfer can still be split.

  • No American Express — Amex cards cannot be used with Card Splitting, either as the primary or secondary card.

  • Same fee type required — Both cards must share the same fee type. For example, you cannot split a payment between a domestic and an international card.

How fees and Chexy Cash work

When you split a payment:

  • Rush fees are charged to the primary card (the first card in the split).

  • Chexy Cash is redeemed against the primary card first. If your Chexy Cash balance exceeds the primary card's share, the remainder is applied to the secondary card.
