Neurofeedback/EEG FAQ

FAQ about EEG, thresholds, protocols, frequencies, etc...

1) Does Myndlift only train on frontal locations?

No, Myndlift uses an additional gold-cup electrode together with the Muse headset which allows you to train any 10-20 location.

2) Is the external electrode necessary for training with Myndlift?

Training with Myndlift is possible without the external electrode. However, it is highly recommended to always use the external electrode in order to ensure a cleaner and more consistent signal.

3) Can the electrode be placed anywhere?

Yes, the active electrode is an external, gold-cup electrode (attached with conductive paste) that can be placed anywhere on the head.

4) Do I need to specify a location to place the external electrode?

If you are using the basic mode of the dashboard, the system will automatically recommend a location for you. It will then show your client where to place it in the app.

If you are using the advanced mode of the dashboard, you simply need to set the “Active channel” and "Reference channel" in the Create Program box after selecting the desired training protocol for your client.

5) What is the purpose of the external electrode?

The external electrode is useful for two main purposes:

  • It enables flexibility of placement and can be placed on any 10-20 location on the head, allowing patients to train different channels.

  • The wet electrode provides a cleaner and more stable signal quality, ensuring a low level of noise and fewer disruptions due to facial muscle movements. It is highly recommended to use the external electrode for all protocol types when training with Myndlift.

6) Can I choose the training and reference channels?

Yes, using the advanced mode of the dashboard, Myndlift allows you to specify which electrodes you want to use as training and reference channels.

You can choose between 5 dry electrodes on the Muse headset (FPZ/FP1/FP2/TP9/TP10) and one external electrode which can be placed on any 10-20 location with the use of conductive paste.

7) How does Myndlift measure the EEG signal?

Myndlift records the EEG waves from the 5 dry electrodes on the Muse headset and the additional external wet electrode. The values you see from the Myndlift system may be different from those of other neurofeedback systems, due to different types of signal processing algorithms used by the software. Myndlift uses the bandpass method, while many other neurofeedback systems use the peak-to-peak method. While the absolute values of the amplitudes will be different, the behavior of the brainwaves remains the same, so for instance, ratios between frequencies will remain consistent.

8) Can I create my own protocols?

Yes. Myndlift has a very simple, user-friendly interface which allows you to inhibit and/or reward any frequency. You can even input your own custom frequencies at the click of a button.

9) Can I do two-channel training with Myndlift?

No, Myndlift only offers single-channel amplitude training at this time.

10) What kind of feedback does the user see?

The user can choose between nine games with both auditory and visual feedback or two training options of feedback based on YouTube videos: one with visual feedback, and one with auditory feedback.

11) Can I control the duration and structure of each session?

Yes, you can set the length of each session, as well as the frequency of breaks. You can also cancel sessions at any time, leaving all the control over the training in your hands.

12) Can my clients train using videos?

Yes, Myndlift includes two YouTube-based training options, where your clients can train using YouTube videos with either auditory or visual feedback. You choose which YouTube videos you want to show your clients using a user-friendly web interface.

13) What information do I receive about my client’s progress?

After each session, you can review your client’s progress using the web dashboard. You can see when they did each session, which protocol they used, the percentage of noise, a Fast Fourier Transform analysis, and the average amplitude and threshold for each frequency in the training band over the course of the session.

You also have the option to access home sessions remotely in real time, receiving information on the signal, view the raw EEG, and even change the thresholds in real-time.

For more information about tracking your client's progress, please read the following article.

14) Is there a way to track my patients’ self-reported progress?

Yes, tracking your patient's’ self-reported progress can be done through our Symptom Questionnaire feature, where clients answer questions in the app before doing their neurofeedback training.

Read more about Symptom Questionnaires here.
