Surge Learning is the mandatory training you need to complete before you can work shifts with Florence. We've partnered with Surge to deliver it.
This training is a legal requirement rather than a Florence policy. Ontario's Fixing Long-Term Care Act, 2021 requires long-term care homes to make sure staff are trained before they start performing their duties. The areas it covers include the Residents' Bill of Rights, zero tolerance of abuse and neglect, minimizing the restraining of residents, fire prevention and safety, emergency and evacuation procedures, and infection prevention and control. If you provide direct care to residents you also need training in abuse recognition and prevention, mental health and dementia care, behaviour management and palliative care.
Getting your login
We'll email your Surge Learning credentials to you. Your username starts with florence. followed by your name. The first time you log in you'll be asked to create a new password, so keep that somewhere safe.
If your login hasn't arrived, check your junk or spam folder first, as it sometimes lands there.
How long you have
You have five days to complete the courses once your access is set up. We ask for this because spaces on the platform are limited and other people are waiting for one.
If you don't finish in time we may pause your access. Your progress is saved, so nothing is lost. Let us know when you have time to commit to it and we'll turn your access back on. You won't be able to finish your registration or pick up shifts until your Surge Learning is complete.
Your yearly renewal
Surge Learning renews every year. That comes from the regulations under the Act, which set retraining at annual intervals.
When yours is due, reply to the reminder email we send you or get in touch, and our team will activate your account and send your updated login details. That usually takes a few days to arrive. Check your junk folder, and if nothing has come through by the end of the week, get back in touch the following Monday. You need current Surge Learning to stay eligible to pick up shifts.
If you get stuck
If a module won't let you move on, reply to your Surge Learning email and we'll take a look. Some modules ask you to click particular areas of an image before they'll mark as complete, which catches people out.
