User Interface Overview

The top bar, panels, layouts, and map that make up Giraffe's workspace.

Written by Holly Conrad Smith

Every feasibility study moves faster when the tools you need are already in front of you and everything else is out of the way. Giraffe's interface gives you a map to work on, panels of tools and data arranged around it, and a top bar for moving between projects, spaces, and the people you're working with.

The top bar

The top bar runs across the top of the window. It holds a workspace menu, a menu bar, a breadcrumb trail, and your layout tabs.

  • Workspace menu: the icon on the far left, either your workspace's logo or the Giraffe icon. Click it to go Home, manage workspace members and settings, change the color theme, switch workspaces, or log out.

  • Menu bar: five tabs, Project, Edit, Tools, Map, and Help. Inside a space, the Project tab is labeled Space instead. Each tab opens a dropdown of commands for that area of Giraffe.

  • Breadcrumb trail: shows Home, your favorite space if you've set one, and the project or space you're currently in. Click any crumb to jump straight to it.

  • Layout tabs: the colored tabs on the right side of the top bar. Each tab is a saved layout you can switch between.

  • Sharing and presence: the Share button and the colored cursors of any teammates working in the project with you, both on the far right.

Panels and apps

Panels are the containers that fill the rest of the window. Each panel holds one or more apps, and you resize, split, and rearrange panels to build the workspace you want.

Giraffe groups apps into four categories: Map, Design, Analysis, and Data. A Map panel might hold Layers alongside the map canvas. A Design panel might hold Properties, Flow, and Blocks. An Analysis panel might hold Analytics, Solar, and Terrain. Open the App Library to see every app available to your workspace.

Click the plus icon on any panel to add an app to it. See Add an App for the full walkthrough.

See Panels for tab settings and every way to arrange panels.

The map

The map is an app like any other, arranged into a panel alongside the rest of your layout. It's where you draw and edit geometries, and where most of your project's spatial data lives.

Drawing tools float over the map panel while you sketch. Open the command palette to search for any action. Press Space or Cmd/Ctrl+K, then type what you want to do.

The map's view controls sit in the context bar at the top of the map panel: Align North, Zoom In, Zoom Out, Center on project, and the 2D/3D toggle.

Layout tabs

Switching layout tabs rearranges which panels are open and how they're split. It never changes anything in your project.

Layouts belong to whichever project or space you saved them in. Each one starts from a built-in preset, one of your own saved layouts, or a template a teammate shared.

See What is a layout? for how layouts are scoped, saved, and shared.

The Data Table

The Data Table is a spreadsheet view of a layer's data. It opens as a popup over the map, so you can filter, sort, and style the layer's records without leaving your layout.

Right-click a layer in the Layers panel and choose Open Table.

The bottom bar

A thin bottom bar runs along the bottom of the window. On a project, the left side shows save status, engine controls, and your active drawing layer and scenario. The center of the bar shows hints as you draw and edit.

See The Bottom Bar for everything the bottom bar shows.
