Straight Skeleton

Get the straight skeleton of a polygon.

Written by Holly Conrad Smith

Use this when you want to find the ridge lines and spine of a footprint or lot within a flow, for example to lay out a roof, a central corridor, or a road down the middle of a site.

A straight skeleton is the set of lines you get when a shape shrinks evenly from all sides. As the edges move inward, they meet and form new corners, creating a branching structure inside the shape. The result is a network of connected lines that shows how the shape collapses in on itself.

How to

  1. Connect a closed polygon geometry, for example from Read Feature, to the Feature input.

  2. Use the outputs. Ridge gives the center spine, Extended Ridge runs the spine out to the edge, and Hips gives the lines from the spine to each corner. A multipolygon returns the lines for every part.

Combine Straight Skeleton with other nodes to build on the spine.
