Are Reps Per Side or Total?

Updated this week

Unilateral exercises should be performed on each side. You’ll always know because there will be a "per side" label next to the reps on the exercise in your set or round.

  • If "per side" is indicated → Perform the listed reps on each side.
Example: 8 reps per side = 8 on the right + 8 on the left.

  • If "per side" is not indicated → Perform the listed reps total, or by alternating sides.
Example: 12 alternating lunges = 6 per leg, switching each rep.

What about alternating exercises?

Alternating exercises (like alternating shoulder press, alternating lunges, or alternating V-ups) are usually not programmed as "per side" because you’re doing both sides back-to-back within the same set. For these, the total rep count already accounts for both sides as you alternate.
