What Equipment Do I Need for the Workouts?

Moves App workout programs are designed to be flexible and work in a variety of environments—from full gyms to small home spaces. Most exercises include built-in modifications or alternatives to accommodate different fitness levels, available equipment, or injuries.

Which workouts require no equipment?

Just one: the Bodyweight option within Travel Moves. It's worth being clear about what that program is, though—it's a one-week program designed for travel, or for any stretch where you temporarily don't have access to your usual setup. It's built to help you keep your momentum, not to serve as a long-term plan. (Travel Moves also has a Bands option, which does require bands.)

Every other Moves program requires some degree of equipment—but that range is wide, and you get to choose where in it you land. Some programs need nothing more than a set of resistance bands and a pair of dumbbells. Others, like Strength Moves, are built around a full gym setup with a barbell, squat rack, and pull-up bar. Weekly Moves sits in between. Pick whichever end of that spectrum fits your space, budget, and goals.

And to be straightforward with you: to really see results, at some point you're going to need equipment of some kind. Strength is built through progressive overload—gradually asking your body to do a little more than it did last time—and past a certain point, your own bodyweight can't keep providing that challenge. The good news is that the barrier to entry is low. A set of bands and some dumbbells is genuinely enough to get going.

💡 Not sure what a specific program needs? Equipment requirements are listed program-by-program in Which Moves Workout Program is Right for Me?

Alternate exercises are always offered for every movement, so a missing piece of equipment never leaves you stuck mid-workout.

To get the most out of your workouts and maintain steady progress, we recommend access to the following equipment:

Recommended Equipment

Dumbbells
We suggest a range of dumbbells from 5–30 lbs, depending on your current strength and experience. Heavier weights may be helpful as you advance.

Resistance Bands
These are extremely versatile for both strength and mobility. We recommend having 2–3 types on hand:

  • Mini Loop Bands – Ideal for glute and leg activation; usually come in sets from light to heavy resistance.

  • Long Loop Bands or Resistance Cables with Handles – Great for warm-ups, pull-up support, and subbing in for cable machines. We recommend a range from 5–65 lbs resistance.

Medicine Ball
If available, a 10–15 lb ball is recommended. Don't worry—alternatives are always included if you don't have one.

Elevated Surface
This can be a sturdy chair, bench, box, or anything that supports your full body weight for step-ups, dips, and more.

Optional Equipment

  • These are not required but can offer variety or challenge as you progress:

    • Kettlebell (15–40+ lbs — a dumbbell can be substituted)

    • Barbell + Plates

    • Squat Rack

    • Adjustable Workout Bench

    • Jump Rope

    • Cardio Machines (e.g., treadmill, rower, bike)

Equipment Alternatives

If you don't have a specific piece of equipment needed for an exercise, you can easily swap it out with one of your exercise alternatives. Adaptability is key, so feel free to modify exercises as necessary to fit your available equipment.

Equipment does vary by program, so we suggest reviewing the unique program descriptions here. And check out some of our favorite equipment here!
