How to Choose the Right Weights

Assess Your Form: Your goal with weight selection is to use a weight that challenges you by the end of each set while allowing you to maintain proper form. For example:

  • If your set is 10 repetitions and you struggle to complete more than 5 with good form, the weight is too heavy. Decrease the weight for the next set.

  • If you complete 10 repetitions and feel you could do another 5 or 10, the weight is too light. Increase the weight for the next set.

Understand Rep Ranges:

  • Strength Training: For rep ranges in the 6–15 range, focus on pushing your strength. This will generally require heavier weights.

  • Endurance Training: For rep ranges in the 15–30 range, focus on endurance. This will require lighter weights.

Using the Exercise History Feature

The Moves App includes a “exercise history” feature, which is a great tool to track the weights you have used previously. This allows you to see your progress and determine where you might be able to increase your weight for future sets.

Program Manuals and Resources

Each program within the Moves App comes with a detailed manual that includes guidance on rest periods and weight selection specific to that program. These manuals are linked in the program descriptions and can also be found in your “Resources” tab.

Steps to Access Program Manuals:

  1. Program Descriptions: Check the descriptions of your selected program for a direct link to the manual.

  2. Resources Tab: Navigate to the “Resources” tab of each program to find comprehensive manuals and additional guidance.

Choosing the right weights is a critical component of effective training. By assessing your form, understanding rep ranges, utilizing the workout history feature, and consulting program manuals, you can make informed decisions that enhance your workouts and help you achieve your fitness goals. Remember, consistency and progressive overload are key to making continuous improvements in strength and endurance. Happy lifting!
