How push notifications work on Android (PWA)

Understand how your customers receive and interact with push notifications on their Android device.

Overview

When you send a push notification, customers with your loyalty card installed as a PWA on their Android device see it in their notification panel β€” just like any other app notification. Tapping the notification opens the card immediately.

Enabling notifications

Customers need to have push notifications enabled to receive your messages. If a customer reports they aren't receiving notifications, walk them through these steps:

  1. Open the loyalty card from the home screen.

  2. Tap Details.

  3. Tap the three-dot menu in the top-right corner.

  4. If the menu shows Disable Notifications, notifications are already enabled β€” no action needed. If it shows Enable Notifications, the customer should tap it to turn notifications on.

Note: Customers are typically prompted to enable notifications during the card installation process. If they dismissed the prompt, they can enable notifications manually using the steps above.

What the customer sees

Notification panel

Push notifications appear in the Android notification panel alongside other app notifications. The customer can see the message you sent directly in the panel.

Tapping a notification

When the customer taps the notification, their loyalty card opens automatically, showing their current balance, stamps, or points.

Dismissing notifications

Customers can swipe to dismiss notifications from the panel without opening the card.

FAQs

Does this work with Google Wallet cards as well?

Yes. Google Wallet also supports push notifications, so your customers will receive your messages regardless of whether they installed via PWA or Google Wallet.

A customer says they aren't receiving notifications β€” what should I check?

Ask them to open the card, tap Details, then tap the three-dot menu to check if notifications are enabled. They should also check their phone's general notification settings to make sure the PWA isn't blocked at the system level.

Do transactional notifications (stamps, points) send automatically?

Yes. Transactional notifications (e.g., "You earned a stamp!" or "Your balance has been updated") are sent automatically when a transaction is processed. You don't need to send these manually.
