I got a generic application error

What to do if you see a vague error message during your application.

If you see a generic error message and don't know what's wrong, the issue is usually one of a few common things. Here's how to triage it.

Refresh the page

Most generic errors clear with a refresh. Press Ctrl+R (Windows) or Cmd+R (Mac), or pull down on a mobile browser to reload.

Check your internet connection

If you're on a weak or unstable connection (poor Wi-Fi, weak cellular signal), the app may have trouble saving or loading data. Try connecting to a stable network.

Try a different browser or device

Older or unusual browsers can cause errors. Try Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Edge β€” and make sure you're on a recent version.

If the error persists

If refreshing and switching browsers doesn't help:

  • Take a screenshot of the error if you can

  • Note what you were trying to do when it happened

  • Contact your property manager β€” share the screenshot and details. They'll relay it to Rent Butter if it's something we need to investigate.
