Buy X, Get Y promotions (Admin Panel)

Learn what Buy X, Get Y promotions do, how patients redeem them in the app, and which offer types they can and cannot combine with.

Overview

Buy X, Get Y is a Special Offer type that rewards patients when they meet a spend or quantity threshold on a qualifying service. For example, “Buy 20 units of tox, get 5 free” or “Spend $500 on Botox, get a DiamondGlow facial free.”

You create Buy X, Get Y promotions in your Admin Panel under Special Offers. Qualifying purchases made through your patient app receive the reward automatically at checkout — no promo code required.

This article explains how the promotion type works. For setup steps, see Set up a Buy X, Get Y promotion (Admin Panel).

Before You Start

  • You need Administrator, Manager, or Marketing access to create Special Offers.

  • Buy X, Get Y applies to in-app purchases only. It does not work for in-office (POS) redemptions.

  • Each promotion uses one qualifying service (Buy X) and one reward service (Get Y). Multi-service Buy or Get lists are not supported yet.

  • Buy X, Get Y does not combine with Memberships, Rewards, or Sitewide Promotions. Plan your offer stack accordingly.

  • Product-based offers are not supported for this promotion type.

Why It Matters

Buy X, Get Y helps you:

  • Increase average order value by tying a reward to a minimum spend or quantity.

  • Introduce add-on services patients might not book on their own.

  • Drive repeat visits when the reward is a follow-up treatment.

  • Reduce front-desk friction because the discount applies automatically in the app.

  • Protect margins with Max Uses Per Order limits when you do not want unlimited stacking.

How It Works

Buy X (qualifying purchase): Choose one service patients must buy. Set either a minimum quantity (for example, 3 microneedling sessions) or a minimum spend (for example, $500 on Botox).

Get Y (reward): Choose one service to offer free or at a discount when the Buy X threshold is met.

Max Uses Per Order: Controls how many times the reward can apply in a single checkout. The default is 1, so even if a patient qualifies multiple times in one cart, the reward applies once. Remove the limit to allow stacking (for example, buy 4, get 2).

Example: “Buy 2, Get 1 Free” with no usage limit — a patient who buys 4 qualifying items receives 2 rewards in that order. With Max Uses Per Order set to 1, they receive only 1 reward regardless of quantity.

What patients experience: Once the promotion is live:

  • The offer appears on Home and Discover in the patient app.

  • When the patient adds qualifying services and meets the threshold, the reward applies automatically at checkout.

  • No promo code is required for public Buy X, Get Y offers.

Step-by-Step Instructions

This article covers how Buy X, Get Y works. To create one:

  1. Log in to your Admin Panel.

  2. Click Special Offers in the MedCommerce Engine section of the left-side navigation.

  3. Follow the full walkthrough in Set up a Buy X, Get Y promotion (Admin Panel).

Best Practices and Pro Tips

  • Start with Max Uses Per Order = 1 until you understand how stacking affects margin on high-quantity carts.

  • Pair the reward with a service you want to promote, not only your highest-margin treatment.

  • Use minimum spend when unit counts vary (for example, tox pricing by area). Use minimum quantity when the unit is consistent (for example, facials).

  • Do not stack Buy X, Get Y with sitewide promotions on the same services. Choose one promotion strategy per campaign window.

  • Brief your team so front desk staff can explain why an in-office purchase does not qualify (in-app only).

Common Mistakes and FAQs

Q: Why did my patient not receive the reward at checkout?

A: Confirm the promotion is live, the patient is purchasing in the app, the cart includes the correct Buy X service at the required spend or quantity, and the offer date window is active. In-office purchases do not qualify.

Q: Can I use Buy X, Get Y with a sitewide promotion?

A: No. Buy X, Get Y does not combine with Sitewide Promotions. Run one or the other for overlapping services.

Q: Can the reward apply more than once per order?

A: Yes, if you remove the Max Uses Per Order limit. With the default of 1, the reward applies once per checkout even when the patient qualifies multiple times.

Q: Can I offer a product as the reward?

A: Not at this time. Buy X, Get Y supports service-based rewards only.

Q: Does the patient need a promo code?

A: No. Public Buy X, Get Y offers auto-apply when the cart qualifies. Private-offer promo codes are a separate visibility setting on other offer types.

Q: Can I attach Buy X, Get Y to a membership or reward?

A: No. This promotion type works only as a standalone Special Offer.
