Image file rename

Written by Todor

With Smart SEO, you can rename the file names of your product images.

When you upload an image with a generic filename like IMG_4823.jpg, search engines have no context for what the image shows. Renaming your files to something descriptive like black-leather-wallet.jpg before uploading gives search engines an additional signal about your image content, supporting your alt tags and improving your chances of ranking in image search.

File renaming is available on the Business and Premium plans

File rename of a single image

To rename a single image, go to the "File rename" page and click on the Edit button near the image whose file name you wish to change:

Fill the desired file name and click "Save":

That's it!

  • You cannot have a whitespace in the file name. Any whitespace will automatically be replaced with a dash

  • You cannot have 2 product images with the same name

Bulk image file renaming with tokens

To bulk edit the file names of your images, select all the images on the page:

And if you wish to edit the file names of all the products' images in the store, click on the "Select all 10+ products in your store" button that will appear once you select all the products on the page.

Then, proceed by clicking the Edit products button if you wish to set a template to be used for all image file names, or, if you wish to generate them with AI, click on the AI Generation button:

Bulk rename with template

If you've selected the bulk method, you can provide a template that our app will use to set the image file names by using our Smart tokens:

Let's say I want the image file name to consist of the product name. I add ${title} to the template and click Save to run the task:

The task runs in the background, so you don't have to stay on the page waiting for the task to complete.

Once the task is complete, I can see that my product images now have the name of the product as a file name, but with a dash symbol replacing the whitespace, as the file names should use a dash, rather than a whitespace:

Bulk image file renaming with AI generations

If you have selected the AI generation method, then you have the option to provide keywords you wish to be used, tone of voice, and optionally, special instructions:

Note that each image requires 1 AI generation credit, so make sure you have enough credits for the generation

This task is also running in the background, so you don't have to stay on the page for it to finish

I've run a task even without providing any keywords or special instructions, but still, the AI handles it okay:

Under the Tasks section, you can check your Bulk File rename tasks. You can inspect the details, and you can also revert each task up to 32 days after its completion.
