Overview
When your school or district returns from Winter Break, it’s common to see old classes still showing, new classes missing, or rosters not updating right away in TalkingPoints. These changes depend on how your Student Information System (SIS) shares semester dates and roster data with TalkingPoints.
This guide will help you quickly troubleshoot the most common semester setup issues — and respond to questions from teachers and families.
📌 Quick semester setup tips
Double-check semester enrollment dates in your SIS
Confirm new semester classes are marked active and being shared
Expect up to 48 hours for SIS updates to sync into TalkingPoints
1) Confirm why first semester classes are still showing 🗂️
For non-TalkingPoints Connector partners (Clever, ClassLink, etc.)
If first semester classes are still showing in TalkingPoints, it’s most likely because those classes are still being shared through your SIS or rostering provider.
✅ What to check
Confirm the enrollment dates for first semester classes are correct in your SIS
Confirm those classes are no longer marked active (if your SIS supports this)
📌 Important: TalkingPoints can only update class visibility if the class data and dates in your SIS are correct.
✅ Next steps
If enrollment dates or class status look incorrect, contact your SIS and/or rostering provider for any issues
After your SIS data is updated, you can reach out to partnersupport@talkingpts.org so our Support Team can review your configuration and confirm whether anything can be adjusted
For TalkingPoints Connector partners
📝 TalkingPoints cannot currently limit class visibility to only second semester classes for TalkingPoints Connector partners.
In most cases, both first and second semester classes will appear in TalkingPoints for TalkingPoints Connector partners. This is expected behavior during semester transitions. We understand that this can cause friction for partners and are in active conversations on how to improve this current experience.
✅ What to do next
Ask teachers to hide first semester classes that they no longer need
Ask teachers to favorite second semester classes to ensure ease of use
Share this Help Center article with teachers so they're aware of all the details on how to hide and/or favorite classes
2) Make sure second semester classes are active and showing 📅
If second semester classes aren’t appearing in TalkingPoints, the most common cause is incorrect enrollment dates or inactive class status in your SIS.
✅ What to check in your SIS
Second semester classes have correct start and end dates
Students are enrolled in the correct section(s)
The class is marked active
The class is being shared through your rostering setup
🗣️ Heads up: SIS changes may take up to 48 hours to appear in TalkingPoints, depending on your sync schedule. It’s best to make these changes as early as possible at the start of a new semester.
3) Validate student roster updates (missing or unexpected students) 👤
TalkingPoints receives student enrollment data directly from your SIS.
✅ If a student is missing from a class, it usually means
The student is not rostered into that class in your SIS
Their schedule change hasn’t synced yet
Enrollment dates are incorrect
✅ If a student shows in a class unexpectedly, it usually means
The student is enrolled in that class in your SIS
The student was moved between sections
Their schedule recently changed
📌 Admin tip: Check enrollment status in your SIS first. If everything looks correct, wait for the next sync (up to 48 hours).
4) Support teachers during the semester transition 🍎
Teachers often ask questions when classes change between semesters. Here’s what you can share.
✅ Teacher Question: “Why can I still see my old classes?”
If the old semester roster is still being shared with TalkingPoints, the class will stay visible. Once your SIS stops sharing first semester data (or updates enrollment dates), those classes will no longer appear.
Teachers are able to hide their first semester classes by following the instructions in this Help Center article.
✅ Teacher Question: “Why can’t I see my new classes?”
If teachers can’t see their second semester classes, it usually means the school or district is not sharing the new semester roster yet.
✅ Ask your team to check:
Are second semester classes active in the SIS?
Are students enrolled correctly?
Are enrollment dates accurate?
📌 Once SIS data is correct, it can take up to 48 hours for changes to appear in TalkingPoints.
✅ Teacher Question: “Why is/isn’t a student appearing in my class?”
Students appear based on the information that TalkingPoints receives from your SIS and rostering setup.
✅ If a teacher reports a missing student, instruct them to reach out to the appropriate school or district administrator contact so the SIS data can be reviewed and updated if needed.
5) Help families who ask for a class code 🔑
If a family is requesting a class code, it usually means they are not correctly rostered or their information is incorrect at the SIS level.
📌 Reminder: Teachers at partner institutions do not receive class codes to share with families.
✅ What to do instead
Direct families to the appropriate school or district administrator contact to confirm their phone number and student association in the SIS
Once SIS data is corrected, their TalkingPoints connection should update after the next sync (up to 48 hours)
FAQ 💬
Can teachers fix semester roster issues themselves?
No. Teachers can’t activate new classes or update student rosters — admins need to update SIS data and allow time for the sync.
How long does it take for SIS changes to appear?
Up to 48 hours, depending on your sync schedule.
If everything looks correct in our SIS but TalkingPoints still isn’t updated after 48 hours, what should we do?
