Overview

When you return from Winter Break, you might notice that old classes are still showing, new classes are missing, or students appear or disappear from your class roster in TalkingPoints. This is normal during a semester change.

TalkingPoints updates your classes and student rosters based on your school or district’s Student Information System (SIS). This guide explains what’s happening, and what you can do next.

📌 Quick semester setup tips

  • Your classes update when your school shares the new semester roster

  • Changes may take up to 48 hours to appear after SIS updates

  • If something looks wrong, contact your admin so they can check the SIS roster and enrollment dates

Reminder: You’re not missing anything! During a semester change, TalkingPoints shows what your school is currently sharing through the SIS. If something is missing or incorrect, it usually means the SIS roster hasn’t updated yet.

1) Understand why old classes may still appear 🗂️

You may still see old classes because your school or district is still sharing first semester roster information through the SIS.

Good to know

  • You don’t need to delete anything

  • Once your school stops sharing old semester information, those classes will disappear automatically

  • This may take time depending on your school’s sync schedule

➡️ If you’re unsure whether a class should still be active, contact your school or district administrator.

📌 Teacher tip: You can easily remove your semester 1 or unwanted classes by hiding classes and/or groups.

2) Check why your new semester classes aren’t showing yet 📅

If you can’t see your new semester classes, it usually means the school or district hasn’t shared the new semester roster yet — or your schedule updates haven’t synced into TalkingPoints.

✅ Common reasons new classes are missing

  • The new semester roster hasn’t been shared yet

  • Your class or section is not marked active in the SIS

  • Enrollment dates are incorrect

  • Your schedule recently changed and the update hasn’t synced

🗣️ Heads up: Once SIS data is updated, it can take up to 48 hours for the changes to appear in TalkingPoints.

What to do

  • Contact your school or district administrator and let them know your new classes are missing

  • Ask them to confirm your second semester classes are active and being shared in the SIS

3) Review student roster changes (missing or unexpected students) 👤

Students appear in your TalkingPoints classes based on enrollment information that your school shares through the SIS.

If a student is missing, it usually means

  • The student is not enrolled in that class in the SIS

  • Their schedule changed recently

  • The SIS update hasn’t synced into TalkingPoints yet

If a student shows up unexpectedly, it usually means

  • The student is enrolled in your class in the SIS

  • The student was moved between sections

  • The student’s schedule recently changed

📌 Teacher tip: If a roster change is urgent, contact your school or district administrator so they can review enrollment in the SIS.

4) What to do if something looks wrong ✅

If your classes or students don’t look right, don’t worry — this is usually caused by semester rollover timing.

Here’s the fastest way to troubleshoot

  1. Confirm whether your school is still transitioning between semesters

  2. Contact your school or district administrator and describe what you’re missing

  3. Wait for the next roster sync (updates can take up to 48 hours)

📌 Teachers can’t manually activate new classes or update SIS rosters in TalkingPoints. This is a change that needs to be made at the administrator-level.

5) I still see a lot of classes, some from the first semester and some from the second second. What can I do to make TalkingPoints easier to use?

Teachers are able to favorite and hide classes, which is particularly helpful during the second semester. Find more details on how to do this in this Help Center article.

6) A family asked for a class code — what should I do? 🔑

If a family asks for a class code, it usually means they are not correctly rostered or their information is incorrect in the SIS.

📌 Reminder: Teachers at partner institutions do not receive class codes to share with families.

What to do instead

  • Direct the family to your school or district administrator to confirm:

    • their phone number is correct, and

    • they are linked to the right student in the SIS

  • Once SIS data is corrected, their TalkingPoints connection should update after the next sync (up to 48 hours)

FAQ 💬

Can I hide old classes myself?

Yes! You're able to hide (and favorite) classes by following the instructions noted in this Help Center article.

Can I add a missing student myself?

No: if your school is roster-synced, student lists are controlled by the SIS. Your administrator needs to update the roster.

How long does it take for changes to show up?

Up to 48 hours, depending on your school or district sync schedule.
