First-time maths lead for TTRS/NumBots - Sustaining enthusiasm (9)

Find out how you can keep pupils engaged and learning.

Written by Dario Viglione

There are many ways to sustain enthusiasm. Some pupils will respond better to certain methods so it's best to use a mixture of the following:

  • Display Boards

  • Leaderboards

  • Presentations

  • Certificates

  • Competitions

  • Reward Shop

Display boards

You can find a wide verity of free and printable resources for both TTRS and NumBots on the downloads page. We've seen lots of awesome display boards sent in from schools. Check them out below:

For more inspiration check out our Pinterest boards: TTRS, NumBots or follow us on Twitter to keep up to date on the latest ideas from other schools: TTRS, NumBots.

Leaderboards (TTRS only)

Using the Custom Leaderboards feature, you can create leaderboards focused on pupils' Rock Speeds, number of correct answers or coins - recognising improvement, as well as overall scores. Please note this is only available to schools with the Stats bolt-on.

Print off your leaderboards each week for your school's TTRS wall display. The printed leaderboards not only look awesome but can be set to show children's rock names, rather than real names, to protect their anonymity:

Presentation (NumBots only)

Download an exciting scrapyard themed certificate presentation - perfect for projecting during an assembly. You can choose what to award pupils on, this includes:

  • Stage Progress

  • Story Mode

  • Effort

  • Challenge

Certificates

Times Tables Rock Stars

Print out auto-populated certificates for the leaderboards' winners to present in whole school assemblies. Continuing to share and celebrate achievements on TTRS in school, will mean children are even more enthusiastic about playing at home. Please note this is only available to schools with the Stats bolt-on.

You can also print off Status certificates when a pupil achieves a new Rock Status on Times Tables Rock Stars. Please note this is only available to schools with the Stats bolt-on.

NumBots

The NumBots' Certificate Hub enables you to create and save a customised pack of certificates, tailored to your needs, which you can return to whenever you need to print out up-to-date certificates that are auto-populated with the children's names.

Competitions (TTRS Only)

We've found competition is a big driver for success on TTRS that's why we've added tonnes of competition functionality over the years.

Arena Games

A competition could be as simple as having a class Arena game once a week, where the children can play against each other and their teacher in a live, one minute game. Children love to compete against their teacher and - be warned - if you allow your pupils to play against you, it won't be long before they're faster!

Battle of the Bands

Another great competition is to hold a Battle of the Bands between classes, gender or yeargroup. You set the start and end time, and the class with the highest average correct answers across any game type, at the end is the winner. You can also download certificates for the top pupils in each class

A live competition (Rock Wrangle)

Hold a live, knock out competition, called a Rock Wrangle, for the top pupils in the school. Not only will children work hard to be selected, but it will be an exciting day for the whole school, who'll look forward to watching and finding out who will be their school's Ultimate Rock Hero for Eternity.

Top of the Rocks

Top of the Rocks allows for competition between schools. Imagine Battle of the Bands but school vs school. You can hold competitions between local schools, schools in your trust or any school you have an affiliation with. As with Batlle of the Bands, you can print off certificates and view individual scores once the competition finishes.

Reward Shop

If you wish, you can purchase Times Tables Rock Stars or NumBots merchandise from our reward shop. We have a verity of items covering every budget, for the most cost-effective items I recommend postcards, stickers and pencils.
