Understanding the structure

What is the difference between a template and a section?

Template: the whole program, saved under Workouts → Templates so you can reuse it across clients. Assigning it gives each client their own copy.

Section: one training session inside that program, shown as a tab along the top of the builder. "Push A", "Lower B", "Full Body" or "Monday, Legs", "Tuesday, Upper body", etc. This is what your client sees as a single workout.

Day: not a separate thing. Sections are the training days, which is why naming them by weekday works.

Can I schedule a workout for a specific day and time?

Not yet. Workout programs do not have date or clock-time scheduling. What most coaches do instead is name each session by weekday, for example "Monday - Push" or "Wednesday - Lower", so the client knows the intended order and rhythm.

The client can train whenever suits them, and the workout is logged with the date they actually completed it. If you want a session tied to a specific date, create a task for yourself as a reminder to follow up.

Building workouts

Can I program AMRAPs, EMOMs or CrossFit-style workouts?

Partly. For a single exercise, set the set type to AMRAP & Weight from the ⋯ menu → Change set type. The reps show as MAX, and your client logs how many reps they managed.

For workouts built around time or rounds, such as "as many rounds as possible in 12 minutes" or an EMOM, there isn't a dedicated format yet. The easiest way is to group the movements in a superset and add a note with the format, for example "AMRAP 12 min" or "EMOM: odd minutes X, even minutes Y". Your client can write their rounds in the notes.

Can I add drop sets?

Yes. Click the ⋯ menu on the exercise and choose Add Drop Set.

How do I add a follow-along video to a workout?

  1. Go to Exercises and create a new exercise with your video

  2. Open the workout in your program and drag the exercise in

  3. Choose Follow-along for that exercise

Templates, edits and updates

Do changes to a workout template update programs already assigned to clients?

No. When you assign a program from a template, each client gets their own copy. Editing the template only affects future assignments. To change something for a client who already has the program, open the program on their profile, make the change, and click Publish - that pushes the update to their app.

Do template edits update workouts already inside a Workout pack?

Yes. A session inside a pack stays linked to the template it came from, so changes you make to the template, such as exercises, sets or reps, show up in the pack automatically.

Clients who add that session to their own plan after you make the change get the updated version.

I updated sets/reps for my client - why doesn't the app show it?

Changes to a client's program only reach their app once you click Publish. If you edited but see the old values in their app, check for unpublished changes on the program.

What your clients see and do

Can my clients track their own weights and reps?

Yes. Clients log weight and reps per set directly in the app as they train, and since our latest update they can also edit a completed workout afterwards to fix a typo, so their charts and history stay accurate. See How Clients complete Workouts in the app for the full client flow.

How do clients track running?

Coachway does not have a dedicated run tracker. Clients should log runs in their preferred app or watch (e.g. Strava, Garmin, etc.). When that activity syncs to Apple Health (iOS) or Health Connect (Android), Coachway imports it the next time the app opens.

See the Apple Health / Health Connect setup articles for connection steps.

Can my clients download their workout or nutrition plan as a PDF?

Not directly from the app. You can export the plan as a PDF from the client's profile by clicking the three dots and Generate PDF on the Workouts or Nutrition tab. If you want the client to have it, upload the PDF to their Vault.

Following their progress

How do I see whether my client actually completed their workouts?

Go to the client's profile and got to Development. Completed workouts are logged there with the date, and you can open any of them to see the sets, reps and weights they recorded, plus the actual rest they took between sets.

Nothing is marked complete automatically. A workout only shows up once the client has finished it in the app.

👉 See How Clients complete Workouts in the app for what this looks like on their phone.

Can I track a custom KPI such as hand-grip strength?

Yes, with a custom metric. Go to Metrics in the sidebar and click + New Metric, then give it a name, a type (Number, Rating or other) and a unit, for example kg.

Once created, it appears on the client's Development page as soon as it has a logged value, and you can add it to a check-in form if you want the client to report it themselves on a schedule.

👉 Full details in Understanding Metrics.

Can I log a workout for my client, for example during a PT session?

Not from the web app yet. Changing sets, reps or weights on the client's profile edits their program, not the workouts they have completed. To get the session into their history, log it in the client's app, for example by going through it together on the client's phone during the session.

Can a completed workout be deleted?

Your client cannot delete a completed workout in the app, but you can as a coach. Open the client's profile, go to Development, find the workout under Recent Sessions & Activities and delete it. It then disappears from the client's app as well.

Can I comment on a client's completed workout?

Not directly on the workout or on an exercise. To give feedback on a session, write to your client in the chat.
