Tracking Shopify purchases in Google Analytics

Install Shopify’s Google & YouTube app and link it to the Google Analytics property connected to Cuttable, so Ad Suggestions can see which pages and campaigns turn visits into sales.

If you sell on Shopify, turn on purchase tracking by installing Shopify's Google & YouTube app and linking it to the same Google Analytics property you connected to Cuttable. It takes about 10 minutes and needs no code. Without it, Cuttable can see visits to your site but not sales, so some Ad Suggestions can't be made for your brand.

Why purchase tracking matters

When you connect Google Analytics, Cuttable reads your website traffic. Purchase tracking adds what visitors do next: viewing products, adding to cart and buying. Cuttable uses that to find suggestions such as which landing pages turn visits into sales, and which Meta campaigns bring visitors who buy.

If Google Analytics doesn't record purchases, Cuttable can't make those suggestions for your brand, and some others have less evidence to work from.

Before you start

  • You need one person who can install apps in Shopify and has Admin or Editor access to your Google Analytics property.

  • Check whether purchases are already tracked, for example by an agency, through Google Tag Manager or by another app. If they are, the person who manages that tracking should make this change. See If an agency manages your tracking below.

  • Know which Google Analytics property you connected to Cuttable. You'll need to choose that same property in Shopify.

How to turn on purchase tracking

  1. In Shopify, install the Google & YouTube app.

  2. Sign in with the Google account that has access to your Google Analytics property.

  3. Choose the same Google Analytics property that's connected to Cuttable.

  4. If purchases were tracked another way before, such as an older tag, a Google Tag Manager setup or another app, remove that tracking so sales aren't counted twice.

  5. Place a test order. It appears in the Realtime report in Google Analytics within a few minutes, and Cuttable picks it up the next time it reads your data.

If an agency manages your tracking

Changing tracking an agency has set up can break their reports, so ask them to make the change. You can forward them this:

"We use Cuttable for ad creative, and it reads our Google Analytics to suggest ads. Please make sure Shopify purchases, add-to-carts and product views are recorded in the Google Analytics property [property name], without counting any sale twice. Shopify's Google & YouTube app is the simplest way if nothing is set up yet."

FAQs

I set it up, but Cuttable still isn't seeing any purchases.

The most common cause is that Shopify is linked to a different Google Analytics property from the one connected to Cuttable. Check the property chosen in the Google & YouTube app matches the property on the Google Analytics card, on the Connectors tab in Cuttable's Settings.

My sales look doubled in Google Analytics.

Purchases are probably being tracked twice, by the Google & YouTube app and by older tracking. Remove the older tracking so each sale is recorded once.

Why are the purchase numbers in Google Analytics lower than in Shopify?

Google Analytics only records visitors who accept cookies on your site, so it usually counts fewer purchases than Shopify. Cuttable compares pages and campaigns against each other within your own data, so lower totals don't stop the suggestions working. For exact sales totals, use Shopify.

How long until Cuttable uses the new data?

Purchases show in Google Analytics within minutes and in Cuttable on its next read. Ad Suggestions refresh weekly, and stores with fewer orders may take a few weeks to build up enough data.

I don't use Shopify. What should I do?

Purchase tracking can be set up on other platforms too, but the steps depend on your store. Ask whoever manages your website or analytics to record purchases, add-to-carts and product views in the Google Analytics property connected to Cuttable.
