Trading Hours, Holidays and Overnight Positions

When the trading day starts and ends, how holidays are handled, and the rules for overnight positions, auto-liquidation and news.

The trading day runs from 6:00 PM ET to 4:59 PM ET the next day. Sunday's 6:00 PM ET session counts as part of Monday.

Market close and holidays

  • Close trades by 4:59 PM ET. Some markets, such as agricultural futures, close earlier.

  • On a market holiday, the session isn't a trading day and its trades count toward the next trading day.

  • Shortened sessions that aren't holidays, such as Black Friday and Christmas Eve, count as normal trading days.

  • Check the CME Group Holiday Calendar for early closes.

Overnight and weekend positions

Holding positions overnight or over the weekend is allowed but not recommended, because of mark-to-market adjustments. DayTraders doesn't close your positions for you at the end of the session.

Auto-liquidation

There's no firm-set liquidation time. Rithmic auto-liquidates only when you hit your drawdown level or Daily Loss Limit, and the account shows "Admin Only" until it resets. You can set your own time in rTrader Pro: right-click the account, choose View risk parameters and set the auto-liquidation time. It doesn't adjust for daylight saving time.

News trading

Trading around news is allowed but not recommended. Fast markets can hit daily price limits or cause platform lag, and losses from these conditions aren't covered.
