Examply's timer lives on every task, so you can track exactly how long work takes without leaving the task you're working on. This article covers starting and stopping the timer, adding time manually, and checking your logged hours.
Time tracking is available on the Pro and Enterprise plans.
Note: Only one timer can run at a time per teammate. Starting a new timer stops any timer already running on another task.
Starting and stopping a timer
Open any task and click Start timer, or press T while the task is focused. Examply shows a running clock in the top bar so you always know a timer is active.
Open the task you're about to work on, for example a task in the "Website relaunch" project.
Click Start timer in the task panel, or press
T.Work on the task. The timer keeps running even if you switch to another project or close the tab.
Click Stop timer when you're done. Examply logs the elapsed time against the task automatically.
You can add a short note when you stop the timer, such as "Fixed checkout redirect bug." Notes show up in time reports later.
Manual time entries
Forgot to start the timer? Click Add time on any task and enter a duration and date directly. Manual entries appear alongside timer-tracked time and count the same way toward timesheets and reports.
You can edit or delete a time entry any time before it's included in an approved timesheet. Once a teammate's timesheet is approved, entries for that week are locked.
Time on subtasks
Subtasks track time independently, and their hours roll up into the parent task's total automatically. If "Fix checkout redirect" has a subtask "Write regression test," time logged on the subtask counts toward both the subtask's own log and the parent task's total — you don't need to log it twice.
Timer states at a glance
State | What it means | Where you see it |
Idle | No timer running for you | No clock shown in the top bar |
Running | A timer is actively tracking time on a task | Clock in the top bar, live-updating |
Paused | Timer stopped but entry not yet reviewed | Task's time log, marked "unreviewed" |
Locked | Entry is part of an approved timesheet | Task's time log, marked "locked" |
Tips
Use the
⌘Kcommand palette and search "timer" to start or stop a timer from anywhere in Examply. If you track time across several short tasks, log each one separately — reports and billable rates are calculated per task.
Guests can't track time; only Members, Admins, and Owners see the timer controls.
