Designing with the MEM Design Studio

Artboard & File Setup

  • Recommended Artboard: 12″ x 12″ at 300 DPI (matches smallest variant).

  • Alternative: 1000x1000px artboard for faster load speed.

  • Avoid Oversized Files: Extremely large uploads (e.g., 15,000px) slow loading and increase bounce rates.

  • Resolution Tip: 1px = 0.012″ works best for scaling across variants.

⚠️ Important: Shrinking your design on the artboard reduces quality but does not reduce product size.

💡 Tip: Always start with a 12″ x 12″ artboard — easiest way to check scale and meet MEM requirements.

Design Best Practices

Line Thickness & Simplicity

  • Minimum: 0.08″ (2mm).

  • Avoid overly intricate details.

  • Use strokes or offset paths to thicken lines.

Visibility & Drop Shadow

  • The Design Studio applies a drop shadow preview effect.

  • Thin lines may be obscured — use thicker spacing and stronger strokes.

Structural Integrity

  • Avoid fragile, narrow areas that may snap.

  • Round sharp corners for safety.

⚠️ Important: MEM cannot offer refunds for signs compromised by design flaws.

Managing Floating & Transparent Elements

  • Any element not anchored will be removed.

  • Design in single-color monochrome — transparent areas are cut out.

⚠️ Important: Double-check for detached shapes (e.g., dots in letters like “i” or “o”) and connect them with bridges.

Adding Mounting Holes

  • Not included by default. Add them if needed.

  • Recommended: ≥0.1875″ (3/16″) for 12″+ signs.

  • Place for balance and stability.

💡 Tip: Keep holes near edges but not too close — maintain strength.

Working with Groups & Variables

  • Group Layers = customer options.

  • Label Groups Clearly for ease.

  • Unlocked = customizable | Locked = hidden.

💡 Tip: Label groups with intuitive names (e.g., “Font Style 1 / Font Style 2”) to help customers select easily.

Adding Text Personalization

Positive vs. Negative Text

  • Black = stays metal

  • White = cut away

  • Use stencil fonts for negative text ≥1″.

⚠️ Important: Non-stencil fonts in negative text will fall out after cutting.

Guide to Uploading your own fonts: Upload Your Own Fonts

Curved Text

  • Use dropdown tool above the artboard.

  • Adjust curvature for readability.

Validation & Formatting

  • Respect character limits.

  • Some fonts require UPPERCASE input.

  • Adjust spacing & alignment (especially curves).

💡 Tip: Name text layers uniquely (“Top Text,” “Bottom Text”) so customer entry fields are clear.

Preview & Finalize Your Design

Before publishing:

  • Confirm connectivity.

  • Test personalization.

  • Check alignment.

  • Preview final result.

Downloading Variant Images:

  • Use Preview option → enter text → download PNG mockups.

⚠️ Important: Install the latest MEM Live Preview Embed Code on Shopify and select the correct theme template for personalization features to work.
