Why was my child’s Spriggy card declined when they tried to make a purchase?
Why was my child’s Spriggy card declined when they tried to make a purchase?

The most common reasons a child's Spriggy Card may be declined.

Updated this week

We’re sorry to hear that your child’s Spriggy prepaid Visa card was declined. Here are some reasons why this happens.

It may be a safety and security concern

There are merchant restrictions set up to help keep your kids safe as they learn how to spend. This restricts them from spending in potentially harmful places including:

  • Bars, taverns, nightclubs, cocktail lounges and discotheques.

  • Alcohol stores – beer, wine and liquor.

  • Cigar stores and stands.

  • Betting, including lottery tickets, casino gaming chips, off-track betting and race tracks.

  • Dating and escort services.

Sometimes this means payments could decline at places like the local corner store if they also sell alcohol and cigarettes, depending on how a merchant has listed themselves.

Their Spriggy card may be locked

Our ‘lock card’ feature helps protect your kid’s money if they lose their Spriggy card. If you have recently locked your child’s card, make sure their card is unlocked before they try to use it again.

Their Spriggy card balance may be low

Your kid’s Spriggy card will be declined if they don’t have enough money on their card to cover the purchase. They can only spend what’s on their Spriggy card, regardless of your Parent Wallet balance.

They need to select ‘CREDIT’ on the merchant terminal

When your kids are using their Spriggy cards in-store and need to insert the card into the machine, make sure they know to select ‘CREDIT’ on the terminal when prompted and then enter their PIN.

If they select ‘SAVINGS’ instead of ‘CREDIT’ when making a payment, this could cause their transaction to decline.

They entered an incorrect PIN

Make sure your kids know their PIN and how to enter it correctly when they’re making a payment. Your kid’s Spriggy card PIN is different from your Pocket Money App login PIN.

The transaction was blocked under the parent’s advanced card control features

Check whether your advanced card control features is causing the transaction to be blocked and consider whether the settings are appropriate.

The primary parent (but not additional parents) have access to advanced card control features for your kid’s Spriggy card, enabling you to toggle off/on access to online transactions, international transactions and/or (where available, ATM withdrawals). See this guide for more information on the advanced card control features.
