Resolving Student Access Issues in Writable for Google Classroom, HMH Ed, Canvas, and Schoology
Writable integrates with various learning management systems (LMS) such as Google Classroom, HMH Ed, Canvas, and Schoology. However, students may encounter access issues due to account linking problems, login errors, or roster mismatches. This guide provides troubleshooting steps to resolve these issues.
Overview of Access Requirements
To access Writable assignments, students must:
Use the correct login method based on the LMS (e.g., Google Classroom, HMH Ed, Canvas, or Schoology).
Ensure their accounts are properly linked to Writable.
Be included in the Writable class roster.
Troubleshooting by LMS
Google Classroom
Linking Google Accounts: Students must link their Google accounts to Writable.
Log out of Writable completely.
Go to app.writable.com and select the Google sign-in option.
Sign in using school Google credentials.
Resolving Roster Issues: Verify that the student appears on the Writable class roster. If not:
Sync the student to the Writable class.
Have the student log in again after syncing.
Activating Writable Access: Clicking a Writable link in a Google Classroom assignment should activate access. If it doesn’t:
Visit app.writable.com and sign in with Google credentials.
Additional Steps for Grayed-Out Students: If a student remains grayed out in the roster:
Open Writable, click the profile icon, and select "Account Details."
Add a Google connection by clicking the “+” button.
HMH Ed
Accessing Assignments:
Students should launch Writable from their HMH Ed accounts to access assignments assigned via HMH Ed.
If the assignment was assigned to Google Classroom, access it from the Google Classroom stream.
Class Setup Verification: Teachers should ensure the Writable program is enabled for the class in HMH Ed:
Go to Home → View Class → Program Settings.
Check "Writable" or "Writing Tasks" and save the settings.
Resolving Greyed-Out Students:
Have students log in to HMH Ed first, then connect Google when prompted.
Schoology
Login Method:
Students must sign in using the Schoology option on the Writable login page to link their accounts.
Logging in only with Google credentials will not show Schoology-assigned work.
Accessing Assessments: Students should:
Find the assessment link in Schoology and click it to launch Writable.
Alternatively, go to app.writable.com and choose "Sign in with Schoology."
Common Errors and Fixes
Duplicate Accounts:
Duplicate student accounts can cause access errors. To resolve message Writable Support and an agent can assist you.
Unlinked Accounts:
Students connected via Google Classroom must link their Google accounts directly to Writable via "Account Details."
License Limitations:
Note that Writable Basic access does not support Google Classroom integration. If users see a black bar when logged into Writable, they have Writable Basic.
Advanced Troubleshooting
Teacher Licenses and Access Levels:
Ensure all teachers are covered under an active subscription to provide access to associated students.
If a teacher is not linked to a license, please have them log in via HMH Ed.
Assignment Settings:
Verify that assignment settings include the intended students, and that students have launched Writable through the correct platform (Ed, Google Classroom, Canvas, Schoology)
