This article is for school admins who schedule events in Bound. It covers triangulars (3 teams), quadrangulars (4 teams), and larger events with pool play. The scoring steps at the end of this article are for the host school.
Note: You need scheduling permissions for your school to create events and add competitions.
How Triangulars and Quadrangulars Work
The setup depends on how your sport scores.
H2H-scored sports: Teams play separate matches against each other, such as volleyball, wrestling, or tennis. The event holds a placeholder that lists every team, plus one head-to-head matchup for each pairing. Scores go on the matchups.
Meet-scored sports: Teams compete together as one field with one set of results, such as cross country, track and field, or golf. The event holds one meet with every team, and you score that meet.
Tip: Some sports can go either way. For bowling, use meet-scored if your conference scores by total pins across the field, or H2H-scored if teams earn points per game against each pair. For swimming and diving, use meet-scored if all teams are ranked together, or H2H-scored if your conference scores simultaneous dual meets.
NOTE: For H2H-scored sports, never enter results on the placeholder. Its Score tab shows a Team Results form, and submitting it marks the placeholder final for every team listed on it. Enter scores on each matchup instead (see Enter Scores After the Event).
Create the Placeholder (H2H-Scored Sports)
The placeholder puts the event on every team's calendar before the match schedule is set.
Note: If you already know the match schedule, you can skip the placeholder. Create an H2H School Competition Event, then add the remaining matchups to that event.
Click Events in the left sidebar, then click + Add Event.
Under Add Hosted Tournament Event, click + Add Event (Teams are known, Schedule is not ready).
Click + next to your activity (for example, Volleyball), then click Meet-Based Competition.
Enter the Event Title (for example, "Bounders Triangular"), set the date, time, and location under Sessions, add every participating team under Participants, and click Create Match.
Note: For bowling, select Triangular from the Bowling Match Format dropdown when creating the event.
Add the Matchups Under the Placeholder
Add matchups from the event itself so they stay under the placeholder. Creating each matchup as its own event creates duplicates when the host adds their own.
Open the Event's Schedule
Click Events, find your event, click the gear button on the event row, and click Settings. The event opens in a new tab.
Click the Schedule tab. The placeholder is the row that lists every team.
Generate All Matchups at Once
On the Schedule tab, click Generate Matchups.
Under Options, set the defaults for every matchup:
Home team: Choose vs for a neutral site or @ when one team is home. A row starts out neutral unless a host school is playing in it.
Start times: Set one start time for all matchups, or stagger them by a set number of minutes, and set how long each one lasts.
Location: Keep the placeholder's location or choose another.
Under Matchups, check the pairings to create. Each row can have its own time, length, site, and location.
For pool play, click Select None, then check only the pairings within each pool.
To remove the placeholder after the matchups are created, check Delete it once the matchups are created. Leave it unchecked to keep the placeholder on everyone's calendar.
Enter a reason for the change if you want one, then click Save Matchups. The button shows how many matchups you selected.
Or Add Matchups One at a Time
Click Events, click the green flag button on the event row, and click + Add.
Click + Add Competition.
Click + next to your team, then click Head-to-Head Competition.
Fill in the Away and Home teams and the matchup details, and click Create Match. Repeat for each pairing.
Create a Meet-Scored Event
For meet-scored sports, create one meet with every team. There are no matchups to add.
Click Events, click + Add Event, then click + Add Event under School Competition Event.
Click + next to your team (for example, Varsity Girls Cross Country).
Enter the Event Title and choose Triangular or Quad from Meet Format.
Set the date, time, and location under Sessions, add every participating team under Participants, and click Create Meet.
Enter Scores After the Event
Note: These scoring steps are for the host school, which can score every matchup. Coaches can score their own team's matchups from Programs: click their program and team level, click the green arrow button on the matchup, then click Post Score. Score the matchup rows, not the placeholder row that lists every team.
For H2H-scored sports, score each matchup. Don't score the placeholder.
Open the event's Schedule tab (see Open the Event's Schedule), then click the pencil button on the matchup.
Click the Score tab.
Enter each team's Final score and any set scores, then click Submit Score. Click + Add another set if you need more sets, or check Forfeit if a team forfeited.
Repeat for each matchup.
For meet-scored sports, click the pencil button on the meet, click the Score tab, enter each team's score under Team Results, and click Submit Results.
To enter stats, see Enter scores and stats.
FAQ
What's the difference between an event and a competition?
The event is the overall tri/quad (for example, "Bounders Quadrangular"). It's what shows on the calendar. Competitions are the individual matchups or meets inside it. For H2H-scored sports, the placeholder and each head-to-head matchup all live within the same event.
Why do I create the event before the matchups are ready?
The placeholder gets the tri/quad on every participating team's calendar right away. You can add the matchups later once the match schedule is set, such as pool play or match order.
My sport can be scored either way. Which setup do I use?
Bowling and swimming can go either way depending on your conference. If teams are ranked against the whole field (total pins, combined times), use meet-scored. If teams play and score against each pair individually, use H2H-scored. Ask your conference if you're unsure.
Do I need a placeholder?
No. The placeholder is optional. It represents the event on your schedule and the other participants' schedules. If you already know the match schedule, create an H2H School Competition Event, then add the remaining matchups (see Add the Matchups Under the Placeholder).
