Using Voices in Cuttable

How to build a voice library, give characters a voice in Shoots, and preview a script's audio before you generate the video

Written by Libby

Summary
Cuttable lets you build a library of voices for your brand, give a character in Shoots a voice, and preview how a script will sound before you spend credits generating the video.

Voices, character voices, and brief casting are available on every Cuttable account.

The Voices library

The Voices library is where you decide what your brand sounds like once, then reuse that voice everywhere in Cuttable. Select Voices in the sidebar to open it. If your account does not have a Voices page, look for a Voices section inside Brand Kit instead.

From the Voices library you can:

  • Use a Cuttable voice, picking one of the built-in voices with nothing to set up. Cuttable currently offers four built-in voices, three female and one male, all US English.

  • Clone your own voice, or a voice you have consent to clone, by recording in your browser or uploading a sample. See How to clone a voice in Cuttable for the full steps.

  • Design a voice by describing it, for example "warm, upbeat woman in her 30s," and choose from the options Cuttable returns.

  • Audition any voice. Every voice plays inline, and you can type your own script to hear it say something relevant to your brand.

  • Rename or delete voices you created.

⭐ Important: you cannot delete a voice that is currently in use anywhere in Cuttable. If you try, you will see a message listing what is using it. Remove those uses first, or keep the voice.

Giving a character a voice

In Shoots, you can give any character a voice so they speak instead of miming. Go to Characters → select a character → Voice.

There are three ways to give a character a voice:

  • Design one. Describe how the character should sound and choose an accent from 35 options, including Australian, British Cockney, Cantonese, and Brazilian Portuguese. Leave the description blank and Cuttable designs a voice from the character itself.

  • Pick from your library. Choose from any voice you have saved plus Cuttable's built-in voices, and play each one before choosing. The character's current voice is clearly marked.

  • Clone a new one. This takes you to the Voices library to start a clone.

The accent picker is the widest voice choice in Cuttable. If you want a specific regional accent, design a voice for a character rather than looking for it in the Voices library, since the built-in library voices are all US English.

Hearing your shoots video before you generate it

In Shoots, brief review lets you hear how every speaker in your script will sound before you spend credits generating the video.

  • Give every speaker a voice, not only the character. A line can be spoken by the character, by an off-screen voiceover, or by a speaker the brief invented, such as "Bartender" or "Mum."

  • Let Cuttable choose. Cuttable picks a sensible voice for each speaker automatically the first time, so there is nothing to configure to get started.

  • Override or reroll any voice you want to change.

  • Play the whole brief. Every line is rendered and stitched into one audio preview laid out against the scenes.

  • See the credit cost next to the Generate Video button before you generate.

If you edit the script after previewing the audio, the preview grays out and shows "Brief changed, click to regenerate." This is expected behavior: it stops you from listening to audio that no longer matches your updated script. Select regenerate to hear the updated version.

Using your brand voices in Recut

You can choose which voice Recut uses for a voiceover, including a voice you have cloned or designed. To pick a voice for a Recut video:

  1. Go to Make Ads and select Recut your videos.

  2. Add the videos you want to add a voiceover to.

  3. Select the + button and select the voice you want from your library.

  4. Give Cuttable a script for the voiceover, or leave the script out and Cuttable writes one based on your videos and your Brand Strategy.

If you do not pick a voice, Recut adds a voiceover automatically when it decides a cut needs one, and writes and voices the line itself. Cuttable can also match the voiceover to a speaker already in your footage, and adds one narration voice per cut. To remove a voiceover you do not want, ask Recut to remove the voiceover when you edit the cut. See Recut your videos for more on how Recut builds a cut.

FAQs

Can I use my own voice, or my founder's voice?
Yes, you can clone a voice from the Voices library using a recording or an uploaded sample. You must confirm consent to clone the voice before Cuttable will process it.

How many voices can I choose from?
Cuttable currently offers four built-in voices, plus any voice you clone or design yourself. The built-in library is intentionally small, so cloning or designing a voice gives you the widest range.

Can I get a specific accent?
Yes, by selecting Design a voice when giving a character a voice in Shoots, which offers 35 accents. A specific accent is not available as a ready-made voice in the Voices library.

Can I add a voiceover to a regular ad in the editor?
Voiceovers cannot be added to a regular ad in the editor yet. Voices, including cloned voices, work in Shoots videos and Recut videos.

Can I hear my ad before it uses credits?
Yes, in Shoots brief review you can preview every speaker's voice before you generate the video and spend credits.

Can I delete a voice?
You can delete a voice only if nothing is currently using it. If something is using it, you will see a message listing what needs to change first.

Why is there voiceover on my Recut cut that I did not ask for?
Recut adds voiceover automatically whenever it decides a cut needs it. To remove the voiceover, ask Recut to remove the voiceover when you edit the cut.
