Required actions on Klaviyo attributes before July 23rd, 2026

Starting from April 2026.

We wanted to inform you of an important update regarding your WAX integration with Klaviyo. These changes will impact your segments and flows containing some conditions on Klaviyo.

⬇️ Please read the information below carefully and act accordingly. ⬇️

1️⃣ Update on the “opt-in status” attribute

Why are we making this change?

Until now, two separate attributes were used to manage the opt-in status of your contacts:

  • The WAX opted_out attribute, used with conditions such as:

    • WAX opted_out equals t or f

    • WAX opted_out equals True or False

  • The "Opt-In" tag within the WAX tags attribute, used with conditions such as:

    • WAX tags contains the tag Opt-In

    • WAX tags does not contain the tag Opt-In

As WAX expanded beyond WhatsApp to support new channels (RCS and SMS), this fragmented setup became a source of confusion. We took this opportunity to consolidate everything into a single, clearly defined attribute per channel.

What are the changes?

WAX now sends a dedicated opt-in status attribute for each channel:

  • WAX whatsapp_opt_in_status for WhatsApp contacts

  • WAX sms_opt_in_status for RCS / SMS contacts (SMS and RCS share the same opt-in status: a contact opted in to SMS is automatically considered opted in to RCS)

Each attribute works the same way and accepts the same three values:

  • opted_in: the contact has given their consent

  • opted_out: the contact has withdrawn their consent

  • unknown: consent has not been collected yet

What happens to the old attributes?

The WAX opted_out attribute and the "Opt-In" tag (in WAX Tags attribute) will be deprecated, and no data will be sent to them anymore after July 23rd, 2026. Any segment or flow condition based on these old attributes will no longer work after this date.

Unfortunately, Klaviyo does not currently allow their deletion, so they will remain visible for now.

Additionally, on WAX, the “WAX opted_out” attribute can no longer be selected in your Klaviyo settings.

What should you do?

Before July 23rd, 2026, you will need to:

  1. Check all your segments on Klaviyo and replace the old attributes with the new “property about someone” : WAX whatsapp_opt_in_status.

  2. Check all your flows containing conditions and replace the old attributes with the new “property about someone” : WAX whatsapp_opt_in_status.

2️⃣ Update on the “whatsapp_valid attribute”

Why are we making this change?

Previously WAX whatsapp_valid attribute worked as a free-text field that was source of confusion as well. For instance you could have:

  • WAX whatsapp_valid equals t or f

  • WAX whatsapp_valid equals True or False

What are the changes?

This attribute now moves to a boolean format. You simply need to select one of the two available values we send to Klaviyo:

  • WAX whatsapp_valid is true

  • WAX whatsapp_valid is false

What happens to the old values?

WAX whatsapp_valid attribute remains fully active and functional but we will no longer send the values t f True and False after July 23rd, 2026. Any segment or flow condition based on these old values will no longer work after this date.

What should you do?

Before July 23rd, 2026, you will need to :

  1. Check all your segments on Klaviyo containing WAX whatsapp_valid, replace the type “Text” with “Boolean” and select the appropriate value.

  2. Check all your flows on Klaviyo containing the condition WAX whatsapp_valid, replace the type “Text” with “Boolean” and select the appropriate value.
