Creating and uploading artwork for metal signs represents a departure from any previous products in our lineup. Prior to diving into the design process, we urge you to carefully review our design guide. This resource is designed to provide valuable insights and tips on navigating the intricacies of this distinctive product, ensuring a seamless and successful creative journey.

Utilizing the Design Studio Template

When creating custom designs for our metal signs, we recommend starting with a 1000x1000 pixel artboard. This provides an optimal canvas size for designing your artwork. You can upload PNG, JPEG, or SVG design files into our Design Studio.

Once uploaded, center and resize your design accordingly, ensuring proper alignment within the template. Our system is equipped to automatically adjust the artwork to fit the correct variant sizes when an order is received.

Essential Design Factors

When creating your metal signs, it's crucial to consider several factors to ensure a successful outcome.

1. Artwork Guidelines for Metal Sign Production:

Your metal sign artwork will be meticulously cut from a solid sheet of metal, requiring an uploaded file with transparency. This is crucial as you'll be working with both positive and negative space. Transparent elements in your design won't be affixed to the final sign, necessitating consideration of elements that require manual attachment to the main artwork. Any floating elements not anchored to the overall design won't be incorporated into the final product.

2. Design Considerations for Optimal Legibility:

Pay attention to the thickness of lines and the level of detail in your design. Opt for simplicity and boldness to maintain legibility in the final product, as fine details may diminish when the artwork size decreases based on the sign sizes purchased by your customers. It's recommended to ensure a minimum thickness requirement of 0.08" (2mm) to guarantee clear visibility and durability in your metal sign designs.

3. Structural Integrity and Design Precautions:

Take into account the structural aspects of the final product during the design process. Metal is a rigid material with minimal flex points, so it's important to design with its characteristics in mind. While the signs are intended for wall mounting, overlooking the medium's rigidity may lead to damage during shipping or installation. Keep in mind that we cannot offer refunds for damaged merchandise if the sign's structural integrity is compromised due to the design. Therefore, it's best to err on the side of caution and ensure your artwork is designed appropriately.

Ensuring designs are crafted correctly falls under your responsibility. Please understand that detached elements may be removed, and overly thin designs could lead to a broken sign. MEM cannot be held accountable for design errors and will not provide replacements for signs that are not appropriately designed.

Floating Elements

Any detachments or floating elements present in your design will not be incorporated into the final metal sign. Before the powder coat process commences, all unattached elements will be removed. It's imperative to secure all desired elements within your design prior to uploading it to our system to guarantee their inclusion in the finished product.

Crafting in Monochrome

Our metal signs undergo meticulous laser cutting and powder coating in a single color. Fashioned from a single sheet of 16 gauge steel, your design is intricately cut during fabrication, ensuring precision and clarity. Transparent elements are seamlessly removed, resulting in the sleek final product. Adopting a monochromatic approach in your artwork facilitates a clear visualization of your sign's final appearance before uploading it to our system.

Mounting Holes

Mounting hardware is not included with the metal signs, nor are mounting holes or brackets incorporated into your designs. Your artwork submission directly determines how your sign will be created. Should you require mounting holes, you must incorporate them into your design yourself. Depending on the design, mounting holes may not be necessary.

When incorporating your own mounting holes, it's crucial to carefully determine the size of the holes. Ensure that your design accommodates the precise dimensions of the mounting hole required. Additionally, consider the placement of the mounting holes. We suggest positioning them in locations that won't compromise the structural integrity of the final product and ensure the sign remains balanced when hung or mounted.

Grouping and Variable Options

In the Design Studio, you have the capability to organize your design layers into groups, each of which represents a separate variable or option within the design. Understanding how to utilize groups and layers effectively can enhance the customization experience for both you and your customers.

  • Grouping Layers: You can group design layers together to organize related elements or to create distinct options within the design. For instance, you might group multiple design image layers for a single product variant.

  • Variable Options: Within each group, the layers act as variable options, meaning only one layer within the group can be selected at a time. This allows customers to choose between different variations or features of the design.

  • Locked Layers/Groups: It's important to note that locked layers or groups will not appear as customizable options for customers on the website. Ensure that any elements you want customers to interact with are left unlocked for customization.

How to Group Layers:

  1. Select Desired Layers: First, select the layers that you want to group together.

  2. Create a Group: Once your desired layers are selected, choose the "Group" option. This action will create a new group header layer, and the selected layers will be enclosed within this new group.

  3. Re-label the Group: After creating the group, you can customize the group header layer by renaming it according to the content or purpose of the grouped layers. Simply click on the group header layer and enter the desired label.

Adding Text Personalization to Your Design

To incorporate Text Personalization into your design, follow these steps:

1. Add a Text Layer:

Begin by adding a text layer to your design. This layer will contain the personalized text that you wish to include on your metal sign.

2. Differentiating Between Positive and Negative Text:

  • Positive Text: Positive text remains on the surface of the metal. It should be set to white to ensure visibility and contrast against the metal background.

  • Negative Text: Negative text refers to areas where the metal will be cut away, leaving the background intact. Negative text should be set to black, indicating the areas where material will be removed.

3. Placement and Overlapping:

  • Ensure that the text layer is properly overlapped with the design elements. This step is crucial to ensure all parts of the design are connected during production.

  • Proper overlapping helps maintain structural integrity and prevents any disconnected parts in the final product.

4. Locked Elements:

When preparing your designs for our website, it's essential to understand how locking and unlocking layers affect the customization options available to your customers.

  • Locked Layers: Layers that are locked will not be customizable on the website. This means that any elements contained within locked layers, including text or graphics for personalization, will be fixed and cannot be edited by customers.

  • Unlocked Text Layers: On the other hand, text layers that are kept unlocked provide customers with the flexibility to enter their own personalization. By leaving text layers unlocked, customers can easily input their desired text during the customization process on our website.

Important Note: Updating MEM Script for Personalization Activation

To enable personalization for design studio products on your website, it's essential to use the new MEM script. Please ensure that you have updated to the latest MEM script.

If you haven't yet updated, you'll need to remove the old script and replace it with the new one to activate personalization for design studio products.

To do so, navigate to your theme.liquid file and delete the "{% render 'MEM-Live-Preview.liquid' %}" code located towards the bottom. Additionally, remove the "MEM-Live-Preview.liquid" snippet from the Snippets section of your theme code.

Preview & Finalize Your Design

Before finalizing your design, it's crucial to preview it thoroughly to ensure that all elements are correctly placed, connected, and aligned as intended. Follow these steps to ensure optimal results:

  1. Review Element Placement: Take a close look at the placement of each design element to ensure they are positioned correctly within your design composition. Check for any overlapping or misaligned elements that may affect the overall aesthetic.

  2. Check Connectivity: Ensure that all elements within your design are properly connected and integrated. Pay attention to any grouped layers to confirm that they function as intended and that there are no disconnected parts.

  3. Verify Customization Options: If your design includes customizable elements or variable options, test each option to ensure they work seamlessly. Check that customers can easily select and customize different variables according to their preferences.

  4. Make Necessary Adjustments: If you notice any issues during the preview, such as misplaced elements or connectivity issues, make the necessary adjustments to rectify them. This may involve repositioning elements, adjusting layer settings, or refining customization options.

  5. Preview Final Result: Take advantage of any preview features available in the Design Studio to see how your design will appear to customers. This allows you to visualize the final product and make any last-minute tweaks before finalizing.

By carefully reviewing and previewing your design before finalizing, you can ensure that it meets your expectations and delivers the desired outcome. This proactive approach helps prevent any potential issues and guarantees a seamless and satisfying experience for both you and your customers.
