How do I add shipping costs for auction items?
Updated over 4 months ago

To add a shipping cost to offset any items you may need to mail to winners, you can do by adding a separate, “hidden” item that’s specifically designated as a shipping cost.

Below, follow the steps provided to create those "hidden" items so that you can accurately calculate the shipping costs needed for each winning purchase.

Step 1: Create a new item for your auction.

If you need a refresher on how to add a new item, please check out our step-by-step guide here.

Step 2: Set the item as a "Fixed Price" item, and add a "Buy It Now" price to reflect shipping costs.

For the price of this item, you'll want to make sure that the item is set as a "Fixed Price" item, so that the price doesn't increase incrementally like other auction items would.

You'll also want to set a flat rate under the "Buy It Now" price that reflects a general cost of shipping for multiple items.

We recommend setting a standard shipping price that's applicable for all items, but you can also create multiple hidden items that reflect shipping cost "ranges," if your items vary widely in size and weight.

Step 3: Remove the item's "number of winners" so the field is blank.

You’ll want to make sure that that new hidden item is set to accept multiple “winners” as well.

The easiest way to do so is to keep the "number of winners" field blank, so you can apply it to as many participants as needed.

Step 4: Set the item as "hidden" as you create your item.

Towards the end of creating that item, you should be asked if the item should be "hidden from bidders on the auction site."

You'll want to make sure that the option for "Yes" is selected, since this is an additional charge that you'll add to winning bids once the auction is over - and your participants shouldn't be able to see or bid on this particular "item."

Once you've finished creating your shipping "item," press the "Save & Exit" button.

Step 5: Manually add this item to winning bidders.

Once you have added that new hidden item, you can manually add that item to all winning bidder's totals, so that the cost of the shipping “item” is now included as another one of their winning “bids.”

We recommend doing this prior to checkout, so your participants can pay for their items and their shipping in one simple transaction once the auction has concluded.
