BIM Hierarchy Panel

This guide explains how to navigate, search, and control the visibility of Building Information Model (BIM) structural components in the 4D Viewer.

Written by Ken Panitz

Overview

The BIM Hierarchy Panel provides a structured, hierarchical tree view of all the 3D model elements loaded for your project. Using this panel, you can explore structural groups (such as levels, zones, categories, and families), select specific components to highlight them, and toggle their visibility in the 3D scene.

To open the BIM Hierarchy Panel:

Click the BIM Hierarchy (structural hierarchy tree icon) in the left Work Panel.

Panel Interface Layout

Core Features

1. Structural Navigation (The Tree View)

The panel organizes model elements in a parent-child structure:

  • Click the Chevron (>) next to a folder node to expand it and view its sub-components.

  • Click the downward chevron to collapse the group.

2. Search

  • Type in the Search elements... bar to search for specific levels, categories, or component names.

  • The search results are highlighted in the tree, and the row count text displays the number of matches (e.g., "15 of 2,400 elements").

3. Quick Header Actions

  • Show all: Instantly restores visibility to all hidden elements in the project.

  • Hide all: Hides all BIM model elements from the 3D scene (useful if you only want to see GIS features or sensors).

  • Expand all: Expands every node in the hierarchy.

  • Collapse all: Collapses the tree back to the top-level model names.

Map and Scene Interactions

You can interact with the tree nodes to control what is displayed on the main 3D canvas:

Node Visibility States

Each node in the hierarchy list features a visibility icon (Eye) indicating its status:

  • Visible (Solid Eye): The element or all children in this group are shown in the 3D scene. Click it to hide them.

  • Hidden (Dimmed/Closed Eye): The element or all children in this group are hidden. Click it to show them.

  • Mixed (Partial Visibility): Some children are visible and some are hidden. Click to toggle all children in the group to visible or hidden.

Single-Click (Selection)

  • Single-click any element to select it.

  • The element will be highlighted in yellow/orange in the 3D scene.

  • The Selection Inspector on the right side of the screen will automatically open, displaying full BIM metadata properties (e.g., volume, material type, schedule phase, elevation).

  • You can select multiple elements using standard keyboard shortcuts: hold Ctrl (or Cmd) to add individual items, or Shift to select a range.

Double-Click (Camera Focus)

  • Double-click any element or group folder in the tree to automatically fly the 3D camera to focus directly on those specific physical elements in the viewport.

Note: The BIM Hierarchy remembers your expansion state, search keywords, and scroll position. If you switch to another panel (like Devices or GIS) and return, your hierarchy tree remains exactly where you left it.
