Tasks Timeline (Programme)

This guide explains how to view, search, and navigate construction schedule Gantt charts and animate building models in the 4D Viewer.

Written by Ken Panitz

Overview

The Tasks Timeline (labeled as "Programme") displays your project's construction schedule as an interactive Gantt chart.

When linked with your 3D model, the Tasks Timeline becomes the master timeline for 4D animations. As you select dates or scrub the schedule playhead, the 3D model immediately shows what should be under construction, completed, or demolished at that exact point in time.

To open the Tasks Timeline:

  • Click the Tasks Timeline icon (Gantt chart/programme icon) at the bottom left of the Work Panel.

  • Note: This timeline requires an active project to be loaded and activated.

Timeline Interface Layout

The Tasks Timeline is divided into a table list of tasks on the left, and a Gantt timeline chart on the right:

Key Features

1. 4D BIM View Toggle

Located directly in the header toolbar of the Tasks Timeline:

  • 4D BIM View Button: Click to enable/disable 4D BIM mode.

  • When active, unstarted schedule elements automatically hide from view, active construction elements dither, and completed components render solid.

2. The Date Scrubber (Timestamp Selector)

At the top of the Tasks Timeline is the Date Scrubber:

  • Click and drag the scrubber handle to adjust the active schedule date.

  • As the date moves, the 3D BIM model updates its rendering dynamically.

  • A red vertical line (strip line) marks the active schedule date on the Gantt chart.

3. Gantt Chart Navigation

  • Zoom Controls: Use the Zoom In/Out buttons in the toolbar to change the chart scale (e.g., viewing schedule by Hours, Days, Weeks, Months, or Years).

  • Scroll to Date: Click the calendar button in the toolbar to scroll the Gantt chart directly to the start date of the project schedule.

4. Task Filtering and Searching

You can find specific schedule items using:

  • Filter Row: Type text at the top of the "Task Name" column to instantly find matching tasks.

  • Header Filter: Click the filter icon in the column headers to filter tasks by status (e.g., Unstarted, In Progress, Completed).

5. Selection and Inspection

  • Single-click a task row in the table list or click its bar on the Gantt chart.

  • The task will highlight, and the Selection Inspector on the right side of the screen will display:

    • Task Name & Description

    • Start and End dates

    • Percentage Complete

    • List of linked BIM model elements (with their Behaviour Types: Construction, Demolition, or Temporary).

  • Selecting a task will also highlight its linked physical components in yellow/orange on the 3D map canvas.
