A Workout or Exercise Doesn't Feel Safe During Pregnancy — What Should I Do?

If a move doesn't feel right during pregnancy, here's how to listen to your body, swap the exercise, and choose the right prenatal program.

⚠️ Your body and your provider come first. Every pregnancy is different. Always follow the guidance of your doctor, midwife, or physical therapist — if a movement causes pain, dizziness, or any symptom that worries you, stop and check with your provider. The steps below help you adjust the app around that guidance; they aren't medical advice.

If you're working out during pregnancy and a specific exercise doesn't feel safe or comfortable, that's completely okay — you can skip it, swap it, or move to a program designed for this stage. Here's how.

First: it's okay to modify or skip

Feeling that a move isn't right for you is a good reason to change it. You never have to push through an exercise that feels unsafe. Common reasons to swap during pregnancy include balance changes, lying flat on your back later in pregnancy, deep core/ab work, heavy bracing, or anything that causes coning, pressure, or discomfort.

How to swap an exercise using Alternate Exercises

The Moves App lets you replace any exercise in your workout with an alternative:

  1. Open the workout and tap the exercise you want to change

  2. Select Alternate (or the swap icon) to see other options

  3. Choose a movement that feels better for you and continue

For full steps and screenshots, see Feature Spotlight: Alternate Exercises. You can also simply skip an exercise, or shorten your workout — see How Do I Delete a Circuit or an Exercise?

Make sure you're on a pregnancy-appropriate program

If you're doing a general program and several moves don't feel right, you may be better suited to one of our prenatal/postpartum options, which are built with these stages in mind:

🚨 Stop and contact your provider directly if you notice

  • Pain, cramping, or vaginal bleeding

  • Dizziness, shortness of breath before exertion, or chest pain

  • Fluid leaking, contractions, or reduced fetal movement

These are reasons to stop exercising and speak with your healthcare provider right away.
