Q: How can I set up a three team Ryder Cup event?

A: A three team Ryder Cup tournament is typically played over multiple rounds. Match play is the norm, where each player or pair earns POINTS that are tallied for a team score. Typically, it's one point to win a match and a half point to tie, but this is not a requirement.

Example: Three teams of 12 (Team South, Team East, and Team North) are playing a Ryder Cup Style tournament over two rounds (Alt-Shot and Singles). Each match is worth one point for a win or a half point for a tie.

During Round 1 (Alt-Shot Round), six players, two from each team, make a paring group (with six pairing groups for the round). In Round 1, they are playing alternate shot match play, with each pair playing two matches (one against each team pair). A total of 18 points are awarded for the round (with 12 points available to each team).

During Round 2 (Singles Round), three players, one player from each team, make a pairing group (with 12 pairing groups for the round). In Round 2, they are playing singles matches, with each player playing two matches (one against each team). A total of 36 points are awarded for the round (with 24 points available to each team).

Of the 54 total matches, Team South won 19, Team North won 22, and Team East won 13.

In this article, we will guide you through the process of setting up a three-team Ryder Cup tournament.

Initial Setup:

Like other events, you will need to take the following steps:

Set Pairing Size:

For the three team Ryder Cup, the pairings for each round will need to be set to sixsomes. To do this go to Event/League > Event/League Pairings > Round & Scheduling > Pairing Size. Set the pairing size to sixsomes (as shown below).

Create Divisions:

When running a three team Ryder Cup, you will need to create a unique division setup. This requires you to create three divisions that include the players from two of the teams in each division. Note: You do not need to add the teams to the created division, just the players. Using our example at the beginning of this article, we have the three teams, North, East, and South. We will create the following three divisions:

  • North vs. East

  • North vs. South

  • East vs. South

To create your divisions, go to Golfers > Event Divisions/Flights/Teams > Add New Divisions. Create your divisions and use Manage Division Membership to verify everyone is in the correct division (as shown below).
