For: Owners, Managers
Chatter is a place in your dashboard to talk to your team. You create channels, post updates, and your team reacts with a heart or a quick reply. It works in the dashboard and in the member app on phones.
When available, it's off until you turn it on.
When you'll get it
Chatter is in early release with select organizations only. If you'd like to take part in the early release version, reach out to your support team. Otherwise, you'll get a notice from us when it's ready for full release.
Turning it on
Only the org Owner can do this.
Go to Settings → General.
Switch Chatter on.
Chatter shows up in the left menu.
Until it's on, nobody in your org sees it. There's nothing to install.
Making your first channel
Open Chatter and click Create a Channel. Give it a name, like General or Warehouse 3. A cover image is optional.
Then pick who sees it:
Public: everyone in your org can view it.
Private: you choose which contacts, groups, and admins get added.
And pick who can post:
Admins only. This is the default and it's what you want for announcements. Owners and Managers post, everyone else reads and reacts.
Everyone can post. Your team can send quick replies and GIFs too. Typing out a message is still Owner and Manager only.
"Everyone can post" is only available on public channels. Private channels are always admins only.
You can change any of this later with the Manage button at the top of the channel.
Who can do what
Owner | Everything below, plus turning Chatter on or off for the org |
Owners and Managers | Create channels, post messages, quick replies and GIFs, edit or delete their own messages, remove anyone's message, react |
Other admins | View and react. No posting or channel creation. |
Staff and other read-only roles | View and react, but only in channels they've been added to. They aren't added automatically. |
Your team, on mobile | React to anything they can see. Whether they can post depends on the channel's posting setting. |
Posting
Three ways to post: type a message (no length limit), tap a quick reply, or pick a GIF. Jolly puts together the quick reply and GIF sets, so there's nothing to set up.
Hover over one of your own messages to edit or delete it. Quick replies and GIFs can't be edited once they're sent. Owners and Managers can remove anyone's message if they need to.
Reacting
Every message has a heart. Click it to like, click again to take it back. The count shows next to the message. Anyone who can see the channel can react.
If something looks wrong
I don't see Chatter in my settings. Chatter is in early release with select organizations only, so it may not be switched on for yours yet. If you'd like to take part in the early release version, reach out to your support team. Otherwise, you'll get a notice from us when it's ready for full release.
Someone can't post. Either the channel is set to admins only, or their role is read-only. Read-only roles can read and react but never post.
A new teammate isn't in the channel. People get added when the channel is created or when you edit who's in it. Open Manage and save, and the list refreshes.
A Staff user can't see a public channel. That's expected. Read-only roles aren't added to channels automatically, and they're left out of public channels. To give one access, add them to a private channel directly.
