How do text message and email opt-outs work?

How Reply STOP works, what happens to a member who opts out, how email unsubscribes are handled, and where consent actually lives.

For: Owners, Managers

Jolly texts and emails members - enrollment invitations, campaign notifications, Jolly Day reminders, referral updates. This is how opting out works, and what it means for your program.

Text messages: Reply STOP

A member can reply STOP to any Jolly text to stop receiving them, and START to begin receiving them again.

  • The opt-out is recorded against the phone number, and it applies everywhere. If someone works for two organizations that both use Jolly, opting out stops texts from both.

  • Once recorded, an opted-out number is suppressed before a message is ever sent. There is no way for an admin to override it, and that's deliberate.

  • Neither you nor Jolly can opt someone back in on their behalf. Only the member can, by replying START.

What an opted-out member still gets

Opting out of texts does not remove anyone from your program. They stay enrolled, they keep earning points, and their rewards still land in their app Inbox - they just won't be texted about them. Because they lose the reminders, they're more likely to leave points unclaimed until Jolly Day, so it's worth knowing who has opted out when you're looking at claim rates.

If you re-invite pending contacts from the Contacts page, anyone who has opted out is reported back as unreachable rather than counted as sent.

Jolly Day reminders

The monthly Jolly Day reminder isn't sent to everyone. A member receives it only if they have accepted our Terms of Service and have at least one unclaimed point or a pending survey. A member who belongs to more than one organization gets a single reminder, against the right organization.

Emails

Referral notification emails carry a one-click unsubscribe link. Email opt-outs are tracked and enforced the same way text opt-outs are.

Admin email reports are separate - those are subscriptions you control from Settings -> Email Reports, and you switch them off there rather than unsubscribing.

Where consent comes from

Jolly is opt-in for employees. Every member accepts our Terms and Privacy Policy before onboarding, in the same way they would for any other employee benefit. Your organization's own enrollment paperwork is the other half of that record. Jolly does not store a separate per-employee marketing consent flag - the opt-out list is the operative record of who has withdrawn.

Common questions

Can I see which of my employees have opted out? Not as a column in the dashboard today. If you need a list, email support and we can pull it.

An employee says they opted out by mistake. Ask them to text START to the number they received Jolly messages from. Nobody else can do it for them.

An employee changed their phone number. Have them update it in their Jolly profile first, before it changes in your HR system - a phone change coming from your HR system first can create a second account. See How do I edit an employee's profile or role?
