Domain replacement: the $15 fee and when it's free

What domains cost, why replacing a domain costs $15, when a replacement is free (registry suspension, our renewal error, failed registration, "--" names, a rare genuine domain blacklisting), and why SURBL/Spamhaus DBL listings are never replaced for free.

What domains cost and why a replacement is charged

Domains registered through Maildoso cost $15 per domain per year on the Custom plan and Monthly packages (legacy Quarterly packages include domains). Your mailbox subscription pays for mailboxes; domains are a separate yearly charge — see Understanding your bill: mailbox plans vs. domain charges. You can also use domains you already own by delegating them to Maildoso's nameservers; there is no registration fee for bring-your-own domains, but they still take up a domain slot on your plan.

If you remove a domain and register a new one through Maildoso to replace it, we charge a one-time $15 per domain — the cost of registering the new domain once the old one is deleted. The fee doesn't cover recreating mailboxes. Customers can opt for voluntary domain swaps at this fee; replacement rules differ for externally registered (bring-your-own) domains, as you own the registration.

To buy new domains, open Packages & Add-ons in the left menu of your dashboard and add domains on the Domains card of the Custom plan.

When a replacement is free

A domain registered through Maildoso is replaced free of charge only when the problem is on our side or outside anyone's control:

  • the domain was suspended by the registry;

  • it expired because of a renewal issue on our side;

  • our system accepted a domain name it can't create mailboxes on (for example names containing a double dash "--" — please avoid those);

  • the domain's registration failed after you paid — the paid slot stays on your plan, so you register another domain in it at no extra charge;

  • the domain itself is genuinely blacklisted in a way that actually blocks delivery. This is very rare, it is not the same as a Spamhaus DBL, SURBL or similar listing (see below), and our team confirms it before replacing the domain.

Externally registered (bring-your-own) domains are not eligible for free replacement. Before replacing a domain, all mailboxes associated with it must be deleted. Once the domain is replaced, the SMTP mailbox slots it used become available again, and you can create new mailboxes on the replacement domain without extra fees.

Blacklisted domains (SURBL, Spamhaus DBL) are not replaced

If a checker flagged your domains on SURBL or Spamhaus DBL, you do not need to replace them. Neither listing affects your deliverability to business mailboxes (Google Workspace or Microsoft 365): properly warmed domains inbox normally whether listed or not, and we have verified this with repeated tests. Spamhaus listings in particular are driven by how domains are named and used (batches of lookalike or branded domains bought together, warmup networks, cold-sending patterns), not by anything in Maildoso's infrastructure. A SURBL or Spamhaus DBL listing therefore never qualifies for a free replacement, free mailboxes, a credit or a refund. If you still want to swap a listed domain, the standard $15 voluntary replacement applies.

If your emails are actually landing in spam — not just listed — book a free Deliverability audit with one of our specialists: log in, click Deliverability audit in the top bar of your dashboard, and pick a time.

Extensions you can't register

Not every extension can be registered through Maildoso. Availability depends on the registry's own rules and can change. If an extension doesn't appear in domain search, it can't be registered here — choose a different extension, or register the domain yourself and connect it as an external domain. .de is currently in this category — see Can I register .de domains through Maildoso? If you've already bought domain slots and then found the extension you wanted is unavailable, contact support — the slots can be used for another extension.

Renewals

Maildoso renews your domains automatically as long as your subscription remains active — you don't need to pay separately or do anything with registrars like Dynadot. If your subscription is cancelled, Maildoso no longer manages the renewals. See Renewing your domains and mailboxes.

Related: replacing a domain ($15) is different from transferring a domain out to your own registrar — see Transferring domains out of Maildoso. Also see Deleting, replacing, reducing, or cancelling mailboxes and domains and, before replacing anything, My mailboxes show as "burned", "blacklisted", or low reputation — a blacklist flag is not a reason to replace a domain.
