Resolving Target+ Error: Barcode Locked for 120 Days
If you are trying to reactivate or relist a product on Target+ and hit a wall, you may encounter a validation error related to your product's barcode (GTIN/UPC).
The Error Message
This item was unlisted previously; Barcode released after 120 days from that previous unlist/last order date
Why is Target+ Blocking This Listing?
In short, Target is protecting the integrity of its return data. When an item is unlisted, Target+ puts a mandatory 120-day "lockout" period on that specific barcode.
This strict timeline directly aligns with Target’s maximum customer return windows:
Standard Returns: 90 days for most items.
Target Circle Card Returns: 120 days (90 days + a 30-day extension for cardholders).
If Target allowed you to reactivate that barcode immediately—potentially with updated pricing, descriptions, or inventory details—it would cause a system error if a customer tried to return the original item on day 119. The 120-day buffer ensures that all historical sales data and potential returns clear out cleanly against the original product record.
How to Resolve the Error
You have two options to move forward, depending on your launch timeline:
Option 1: Wait Out the Lockout Period
If you must use the exact same barcode, you will need to wait until the 120 days have fully passed. This countdown begins on the date the item was officially unlisted or on the date of its last customer order—whichever occurred more recently. Once the lockout clears, the barcode is released, and you can reactivate the listing.
Option 2: Assign a Fresh Barcode (For Immediate Relisting)
If you cannot afford to wait four months and need the item live on Target+ immediately, you can bypass the lockout by assigning a new, unique GTIN/UPC to the product. Because it is a completely fresh barcode, it will not inherit the previous listing's history or restrictions.
⚠️ Important: We strongly recommend obtaining explicit approval from your Target+ Partner Manager before assigning a new barcode to an existing item in your catalog.
