The Pencil Pro glossary can help you understand the key terms and concepts associated with the Pencil AI system. Whether you're a new user or an experienced one, this resource is designed to help you navigate the various features, tools, and functionalities that Pencil offers.

Links are also provided throughout, to view articles for more information on the terms listed below:

General Pencil Terms

At Pencil, work is organised within workspaces. Each workspace holds essential details about your brand, including assets, templates, and creatives. You can create multiple workspaces to accommodate different brands or projects, ensuring flexibility and easy management.

The Brand Library is where you supply Pencil with key information about your brand. This content is then used to create on-brand creatives. You can include details like brand guidelines, logos, brand history, and more to ensure your visuals align with your brand identity.

The Asset Library provides the ability to upload raw assets and save generated assets for creating visuals. Any type of image and video can be added to the Asset Library, and these materials can be used to generate your creatives.

The Template Library houses all Pencil templates within that workspace. Templates are used as a starting point when generating creatives. Pencil provides over 500+ default templates for many channels, and custom templates can also be created to suit your brand. More information on how to use the static template editor can be found here.

Copy and Image generation models available within the workspace. Models available can be located within AI Governance. Copy and Image models provide the option of variation when generating outputs.

All creative generation in Pencil takes place within projects. A project can include one or multiple creatives, along with a project description. Projects help you organise and manage your content efficiently.

A personalised advertisement that combines visual elements, such as images and text, tailored to effectively promote a product or service. A guide to the Chat To Ads tool can be found here.

Formats

A format is a particular size inside a creative. Creatives always have at least 1 format, but they can have any number of them. Formats are not necesarily specific, you can create whatever format you want.

At Pencil, you generate through tools like Creative Generation tool, Image generation tool, or the Text generation tool.

Prompts

A prompt is the text or query you provide to an AI model in order to generate a response or answer. Some models in Pencil also have negative prompting.

Predictive Performance

Pencil Benchmarks shows how you stack up against others in your industry while clueing you into the hot trends and creative angles everyone else is using. Pencil's AI sifts through over a million ads in various industries to dig out fresh and successful insights, copy, imagery & ad creative.

Pencil uses AI trained on $1B+ in ad spend and data from your (the client's) ad accounts, to predict which creatives & assets will be highest performing. Predictions can be personalised to provide different scores according to the metrics selected.

Pencil performance insights can be compared based on the below key performance indicators:

- CTR: Click through rate

- CPA: Cost per action

- CPC: Cost per click

- ROAS: Return on ad spend

- CPM: Cost per mille, or cost per thousand impressions

Brand Safety

Pencil Pro Terms of Service specify that all content you upload and/or generate using our tools belongs to you. You (the client) retains IP ownership of inputs (prompts) and outputs (generated work).

The customer-dedicated predictive model shall not be made available by Pencil for use by any other Pencil customers. We ringfence your (the client's) data: This means that no one else benefits from your proprietary data โ€“ we train bespoke models just for you.

Human-In-The-Loop

Pencil is a tool designed to augment the effort of human teams and so there is always a person prompting, curating, editing, approving & exporting the content. We call this human oversight "human-in-the-loop".

Tools

An AI-powered content creation platform that combines templates, assets and prompts to generate high-quality ads for various social media platforms. Creative Generation can be completed both manually through templates and using an AI-assistant through 'Chat to Ads'.

An AI-powered content creation platform designed to help users generate high-quality text for various purposes, including marketing copy, social media posts, and blog articles. Text Generation can be accessed as a separate tool but is also embedded within the Creative Generation tool of 'Chat to Ads'.

An AI-driven tool that creates custom images based on inputed prompts or information added to the brand library.

An automation tool that allows users to customise and vary creatives to generate a high volume of variations for different audiences and purposes using inputted data or generations.

Creative Terms

Templates are the starting tool used to generate creatives. They enable users to determine the placement of creatives according to brand guidelines.

Variation

A variation is the result of running a feed through a creative. The output of this is the creative variations.

Layers

Layers in a visual file are individual elements or images placed on top of each other, allowing for separate adjustments and effects to be applied independently.

Elements

Elements are the vector files you can upload to Pencil. Elements can be used to mask images and can be modified to create and enhance designs.

Aspect Ratio

An aspect ratio is the proportional relationship between the width and height of an image, typically expressed as two numbers separated by a colon (e.g., 16:9). Different social media platforms require images of differing aspect ratios.

Canvas

A canvas is the area in which you create and edit designs. Once you create a new project, you will see the canvas in the centre of your workspace. Here you can add, arrange, and manipulate various elements for your project.

Mapping

The process of customising how different design elements are displayed on images created when using feed variations. Mapping allows the user to control which element will be changed in the feed variation process.

Safezone

The area within a design where essential content is placed to ensure it remains visible and uncut across different social media platforms.

User Settings

Plan and Billing

The usage plan that the particular workspace is allocated to can be located here. Information regarding billing cycles, cost and usage can be reviewed alongside the option to make amendments to the Plan if necessary. Invoices can be accessed and downloaded as well an option provided to cancel your subscription.

Workspaces

All workspaces that an individual user has access to can be located here with a breakdown of each workspace: including the total number of users, generations and exports. Workspaces can be added but also removed.

Integrations

Pencil can be connected to Third Party channels and Third party tools to enable data to move inside and outside of Pencil. This supports Pencil to provide actual data on performance to inform predictions on creatives.

Export History

View and access all creatives that have been exported by all users across the workspace.

Manage Team

Team member access is controlled in this section. Users can be invited, given a user 'role' and also be removed from the workspace. Information regarding the number of generations that each user has performed can also be located next to their name.

User Access (Located on Manage Team page)

Roles that are allocated pre-determine the access and permissions that users have across that particular workspace. User access can be adjusted for each workspace by admins only.

All copy and image generation models can be located here. Admin users have the relevant permissions to be able to select/deselect relevant models that a brand wish to use.

Default Prediction goal settings can also be selected and adjusted here, including being able to select the relevant sector for your brand to provide more accurate context for predictions.

Beta Features

Beta features are new tools or integrations available with Pencil.

Dark Mode

Dark mode is a display setting that uses a darker colour scheme, typically with light text on a dark background, instead of the traditional light background with dark text. It is designed to reduce eye strain in low-light environments, improve readability, and save battery life on devices with OLED or AMOLED screens.
