Create variations of an ad

Take an ad you've made and generate a fresh set of new ads built on the same winning idea.

Written by Libby

Create Variations lets you take an ad you already have, one you made in Cuttable or one you upload, and generate a fresh set of new ads built on the same winning idea. It's the fastest way to scale a creative that's working without writing a brief from scratch.

Variations are not copies. Cuttable reads the reference ad, works out what made it work (the hook, the angle, the offer, the look), builds off those, and creates you new variations to test. You get ads that land the same idea but look visibly different, ready to test.

Three ways to create variations

From one of your ads made in Cuttable

On any finished ad in Your Ads, open the actions menu (the three dots) and select Create Variations. Cuttable opens Make Ads with that ad loaded as your reference and gets to work.

Note: Create Variations appears once an ad has finished rendering. If you don't see it yet, give the ad a moment to complete.

From an ad you upload

In Make Ads, you can drag and drop in a reference ad (a video or an image) and ask Cuttable to create variations. This works for any ad, including one made in another tool or a competitor ad you want to riff on. Cuttable reads the uploaded ad the same way and builds a brief from it.

From the Ad Insights page

You can also start a variation directly from your performance data. On any ad row in Ad Insights, select Create Variations. This opens Make Ads with that ad loaded as your reference, the same as starting from Your Ads. This is useful when you've set targets in Ad Insights and want to build on the ads that are already meeting them.

Guide what to keep and what to change

By default, Cuttable decides what's load-bearing and what to vary. You can steer it in your brief:

  • Keep the copy — say "keep the script" or "same words" and Cuttable holds the hook, offer and call to action, then varies the visuals.

  • Keep the look — "same visual style" or "same aesthetic" holds the format where possible and other visual elements.

  • Keep everything except one thing — "keep it all but change the hook".

  • Push it further — "punchier hook", "less corporate", "more focus on the product".

If you don't add direction, Cuttable uses its own read of the ad.

Tips for better variations

  • Start from a strong ad. Variations are only as good as the idea they're built on, so pick a proven performer as your reference.

  • Say what's working. If you know why the ad wins, tell Cuttable so it anchors the right thing.

  • Generate, test, iterate. Push a few variations live, see what performs, then make variations of the new winner.

FAQs

Can I create variations from more than one ad at a time?

Yes, you can create variations from more than one ad at once. If those ads share the same core message or hook, this works well. If they have different messages or hooks, create variations from each ad individually instead. This gives Cuttable one clear hook or message to build from each time, rather than mixing signals from ads that don't share a common angle.
