What Patients See During a Video Chat Visit

A walkthrough of the patient's side of an Updox Video Chat visit: getting the invite, allowing the camera and microphone, waiting in the Waiting Room, using the toolbar during the visit, and what happens when it ends.

How does a patient join a Video Chat visit?

After you send an invite, the patient gets a text or email with a Join Virtual Visit link.

Note: Waiting Room links work for 48 hours. "Start now" video chat links work for 10 minutes.

What happens when the patient clicks the link?

  1. Allow camera and microphone. The patient's browser asks for permission to use their camera and microphone. They need to click Allow.

  2. Device test. Updox checks that their camera, microphone, and browser will work. Green check marks mean they're ready.

  3. Waiting Room. The patient sees a message that they're checked in and the visit will start soon. They wait there until you start the visit.

Tip: Remind patients to stay on the Waiting Room page. Closing it or leaving can drop their connection.

What if the patient's camera or microphone doesn't work?

The patient should:

  • Make sure they clicked Allow for the camera and microphone.

  • Refresh the page to get the permission prompt again.

  • Restart their device if it still doesn't work.

What can the patient do during the visit?

The patient's toolbar at the bottom of the screen lets them:

Button

What it does

Mute

Turn their microphone off or on

Switch camera

Switch between the front and back camera on a phone or tablet

Hide video

Turn their camera off or on

Leave

Leave the visit

Note: If a patient leaves by accident, send them a new invite to rejoin.

Can the patient ask for an interpreter?

Yes. The patient can request an interpreter when they check in, or during the visit.

What happens when the visit ends?

A video chat summary is created after the visit.
