Why is it important?
Until now, BOMs depended on integrated suppliers like ABC Supply and SRS. With Custom Material Catalogs and BOM Templates, you can use your own materials and prices, including from local suppliers, build reusable templates, and create, edit, and export a bill of materials for any project.
What will you need?
Admin access to your organization.
Your materials and prices, either entered by hand or in the bulk import CSV template.
Step by Step Instructions
Step 1: Go to “Settings > Project Management > Project Settings” and turn on “Enable Custom BOM Module”, then save.
Step 2: Go to “Manage Database > Material Catalogs”. Add suppliers and categories (by job type) as needed.
Step 3: Add materials one at a time, or use “Bulk Import” to upload materials from the CSV template.
Step 4: Go to “BOM > Custom BOM Templates” and add a template with a name, product type, and description.
Step 5: Open a project and go to “BOM Calculator > Custom BOM Calculator”. Create a new BOM from a template or start blank.
Step 6: Add catalog materials to the BOM and adjust quantities and prices.
Step 7: Export the BOM as a “PDF” or “CSV” to send to your supplier.
Real Life Scenario
A roofer buys shingles and underlayment from a local supply yard that isn’t integrated with SubcontractorHub. The admin bulk-imports the yard’s price list, builds a standard re-roof template, and the project team creates a BOM from that template on each job, adjusts quantities, and exports a PDF to email to the yard.
Pro Tip
Build a template for each of your most common job types. Starting a BOM from a template is much faster than starting blank, and keeps material lists consistent across your team.
Troubleshooting
Problem: I don’t see Custom BOM Templates or the Custom BOM Calculator
Make sure Enable Custom BOM Module is turned on in Project Settings. When it is off, these options are hidden.
Problem: My order didn’t go to the supplier
The supplier field is for reference only. There is no supplier integration or automatic ordering, so export the PDF or CSV and send it to your supplier.
Problem: My bulk import didn’t load
Use the CSV template from the Bulk Import screen and check that each row is filled in before uploading again.
