An Arcade Game is a form of entertainment that once ruled the gaming world. It is basically a coin-operated entertainment machine, usually found in "arcade centers," shopping malls, restaurants, or amusement parks. These games were simple, fast, addictive, and built around achieving a high score.

Main Features of Arcade Games

Arcade games have some basic features that set them apart from home console (like PlayStation or Xbox) or PC games:

  • Pay-per-Play: Players had to insert a coin or token to play each game.

  • Simple but Challenging: The games were very easy to learn but very hard to master.

  • Short Sessions: Games were designed so that one session would end in a short time (usually 3-5 minutes).

  • Goal of a High Score: The main goal of most arcade games was to get the highest score and put one's name on the leaderboard.

  • Limited Lives: Players were given a limited number of 'lives' or 'chances'. When their lives ran out, it would show "Game Over," and continuing required more coins.

  • Special Controllers: Many arcade machines had special controllers for specific games, such as steering wheels for racing games, joysticks and buttons for fighting games, or light guns for shooting games.

How to Play Arcade Games

The process of playing an arcade game is very simple and straightforward. Here it is, step-by-step:

Step 1: Select a Machine and Game First, you need to go to an arcade center (though they are rare now) or find a place that has arcade machines. Choose your preferred game (e.g., fighting, racing, or shooting).

Step 2: Insert Coin or Token Each machine has a specific slot for inserting coins or tokens. This is the "price" to play the game. Some modern arcade centers have rechargeable card systems.

Step 3: Start the Game After inserting the coin, the machine will "activate." Usually, "Press 1 Player Start" or "Press 2 Player Start" will appear on the screen.

  • 1 Player: If you want to play alone.

  • 2 Player: If you want to play with a friend (if the game supports it).

Step 4: Understand the Controls Before starting the game, look at the controls. Most classic arcade machines have:

  • Joystick: It is usually on the left and is used to move your character or vehicle (like Pac-Man or a fighter jet) in different directions (up, down, left, right).

  • Buttons: These are on the right and are used for specific actions (like jumping, shooting, or punching).

The control panel of each machine often has instructions on what each button does.

Step 5: Play and Achieve Goals Your main goal is to follow the game's rules to score as many points as possible or pass as many levels as you can. Your screen will show your "Life" or "Health" bar. You will lose a life if you are hit by an enemy or make a mistake.

Step 6: Game Over and Continue When all your lives are finished, the words "Game Over" will flash on the screen.

  • Continue?: At this time, the game gives you a countdown timer (e.g., 10 seconds). If you insert another coin or token within this time, you can start the game again from where you lost.

  • High Score: If you don't insert a coin, the game will end. If your score is high enough, the game will give you the chance to enter your initials (the first three letters of your name) on the leaderboard. This was the highest honor in arcade gaming!

Popular Arcade Game Genres

Various types of games dominated the arcade world:

  • Fighting Games: Such as Street Fighter II, Mortal Kombat, and Tekken. These games are what made "two-player" or multiplayer arcade gaming popular.

  • Beat 'em Up: Such as Final Fight, Double Dragon, and The Simpsons. In these games, the player had to walk from one side of the screen to the other and fight enemies.

  • Shooters: Such as Space Invaders, Galaga, and R-Type. These usually involved controlling a spaceship and shooting countless enemies.

  • Racing Games: Such as Out Run and Daytona USA. These often had car seats and steering wheels that gave a realistic experience.

  • Puzzle Games: Such as Tetris and Bubble Bobble.

Conclusion

Although the popularity of arcade centers has declined with the arrival of powerful home consoles (PlayStation, Xbox) and PC gaming, the influence of arcade games still exists in the gaming industry today. The "simple, fast, and addictive" design of mobile games is largely inspired by the philosophy of arcade games. Currently, arcade games are making a comeback through "retro gaming" or "barcades" (Bar + Arcade), which brings back memories of those golden days.
