The differences between eMSP and CPO roles

When you charge your electric vehicle, several players are involved behind the scenes. Two key roles come up frequently: the CPO and the eMSP. Here's everything you need to know 👇

The CPO: the one who installs and manages charging points

CPO stands for Charge Point Operator.

This is the player who:

  • installs and maintains charging stations,

  • operates the stations on a daily basis (availability, maintenance, supervision),

  • provides the physical infrastructure to charge your vehicle.

👉 Electra is a CPO. We build and operate our own fast charging stations across Europe.

📱 The eMSP: the one who gives you access to charging

eMSP stands for Electric Mobility Service Provider.

This is the player who:

  • provides you with a charging contract (subscription, RFID card, mobile app...),

  • manages your user account and your billing,

  • gives you access to one or more charging networks, including those of other CPOs.

👉 Some examples of eMSPs: Chargemap, Shell Recharge, Plugsurfing, Free2Move Charge, etc.

💡 The price applied when charging via an eMSP card is set by your card provider.

🤔 What if I use the Electra app directly?

In that case, Electra plays both roles: we provide the charging stations (CPO) and directly manage your account and billing (eMSP). This is the simplest way to enjoy our preferential rates.
