How to Manually Move a Container

Explains how to use the Move Container button in the Inventory tab to record a container’s movement to a new location and answers some frequently asked questions like when you’d want to use this process and what are the different Move type options.

Updated today

📍Are you looking to just move the location pin of a container? If so, check out Manually Adjust a Container's Geolocation Pin (from the container detail page). That only adjusts the latitude and longitude coordinates — the customer, address, and service assignment all stay the same. Think of it as a minor geolocation correction.

The Move Container dialog, on the other hand, is a separate, intentional action that logs a transaction in the ledger and can reassign the container to a different customer or yard entirely.

This article explains how to manually log a container's movement to maintain an accurate transaction history. By using the Move container feature, office staff can record historical moves, correct location data, and ensure that every asset's lifecycle is fully documented within the system. This provides a clear audit trail for billing and inventory management.

This feature is currently in an open beta. If you run into any issues or have feedback, reach out to support with the blue chat bubble in your Hauler Hero account or support@haulerhero.com.

When would we want to manually record a container’s movement to a new location?

While drivers on the tablet will typically trigger moves automatically through work order actions, the manual Move Container function in the Inventory tab is mainly used for:

  • Back-filling a move the driver did but didn't log (e.g., tablet went down mid-route)

  • Manually logging historical container movements

  • Correcting a container’s location when it wasn’t automatically tracked

How to Move a Container:

  1. Navigate to the Inventory tab.

  2. From the All Containers list, find the container you wish to move and click the vertical three dot icon on the right side.

  3. Select Move container.

  4. From the Move container window, you’ll select a Location type from the dropdown.

    1. Choose Yard to move it to one of your company’s yards

    2. Choose Customer to move it to a customer’s service location

  5. If you selected Customer, you’ll need to search for and select the correct Customer, Service location, and optionally, the associated service.

  6. If needed, drag the pin on the map to adjust the exact placement of the container at the new location.

  7. Select a Move type from the dropdown. This describes the action being logged, such as Deliver, Remove, or Repair.

  8. Select the Status of the move.

    1. For logging a past event, choose Historical move.

    2. Other options include: Scheduled move, In Transit on a truck, and Confirmed.

  9. If logging a historical move, click the calendar icon to change the Move date to when the event occurred.

  10. If this move changes the container's current default location, check the Update container location box.

  11. Click the Move container button to save the record.

If serialization is enabled, the driver/user will be prompted to confirm the specific container during a move action.

Tips:

This manual process is ideal for back-logging moves or making corrections. For future container movements, it is recommended to create and assign a work order, which will automatically track the location change upon completion.
