When editing a Master Route, you'll choose between two positioning methods.
Smart Neighbors (Recommended)
Smart Neighbors keeps a stop between the same neighboring customers, even when daily routes contain different stops due to recurring schedules, holidays, or on-demand work.
For example:
If a stop is placed between Customer A and Customer B on the Master Route, the system will keep it between those same customers whenever possible on future daily routes.
This helps maintain route consistency even when the route changes from day to day.
Fixed Position
Fixed Position uses an exact sequence number.
If a stop is placed in Position 6, it will remain in Position 6 moving forward.
This option is useful when the sequence number itself is important, such as:
First stop of the day
Last stop before a disposal run
Routes that require strict position control
The active mode is always displayed in the Master Route header so you can quickly see which positioning method is being used.
Smart Neighbors vs. Fixed Position
When editing a Master Route, you can choose how stop positions are maintained across future daily routes.
Hauler Hero offers two positioning methods:
Smart Neighbors (Recommended)
Fixed Position
Understanding the difference between these options will help you choose the best approach for your operation.
What is Smart Neighbors?
Smart Neighbors keeps a stop positioned between the same neighboring customers rather than locking it to a specific sequence number.
For example, imagine your Master Route looks like this:
Customer A
Customer B
Customer C
If you move Customer B so it sits between Customer A and Customer C, Smart Neighbors remembers those relationships.
As future daily routes are generated, the system attempts to keep Customer B between those same customers, even if additional stops appear or disappear due to recurring service schedules.
Why This Matters
Many haulers operate routes that include:
Weekly customers
Every-other-week customers
Monthly customers
On-demand services
Because those customers don't appear every day, the exact stop count on a route changes constantly.
Smart Neighbors helps preserve route flow even when the route composition changes.
Example
A Master Route contains:
Customer A
Customer B
Customer C
A weekly route might contain all three customers.
An A/B week route might only contain Customer A and Customer C.
A monthly customer may appear only once each month.
With Smart Neighbors enabled, the system focuses on maintaining relative stop order rather than forcing a stop into a specific sequence number.
This results in more consistent routing across daily routes with varying customer schedules.
What is Fixed Position?
Fixed Position locks a stop to a specific sequence number.
If a stop is placed in Position 6, the system will continue treating Position 6 as its intended location moving forward.
This approach is useful when the exact sequence number matters more than the neighboring stops.
Common Use Cases for Fixed Position
First stop of the day
Last stop before disposal
Stops that must occur at a specific point in the route
Routes with minimal recurrence variation
Which Option Should I Use?
For most residential and recurring service routes, Smart Neighbors is recommended.
Smart Neighbors was designed specifically to improve route consistency for operations with:
A/B week service schedules
Every-other-week customers
Monthly customers
Mixed recurrence patterns
Fixed Position may be a better fit when route order needs to remain tied to exact sequence numbers.
How Do I Know Which Mode Is Active?
The active positioning method is displayed in the Master Route header.
You can quickly see whether the route is currently using:
Smart Neighbors
Fixed Position
before making changes to the route.
Can I Change Modes Later?
Yes.
You can switch between Smart Neighbors and Fixed Position at any time from the Master Route controls.
Keep in mind that future route edits will follow whichever mode is currently active.
